From my thinking, you want to turn the trailer towards the driver side, once you have the space to clear the cone. With hand on top of the wheel turn right. In my opinion, this should be a gradual angle, not a hard cut of the wheel.

    If that makes sense...

    how you are backing
exactly, let me give an example, i was in a campground, a family just bought a travel trailer and were attempting to back it in to their first campsite, they were really struggling so i asked if they wanted help, the guy let me get in and back it up for him, but before i could another guy came over who said he used to back up campers all the time, he was trying to help but just making it harder by explaining which way to turn the wheel, i didnt need his help or i wouldv asked for it, so i told him instead of you standing there and making it harder how bout you get in an do it and i will get back to my dinner,he didnt want to. so while he stood there and told me which way to turn the wheel i ignored him and backed it in. i had to tell him to get out of the way when i pulled up on the site across from us to use all the room, he wanted to do it the hard way and not use all that room, i just wanted to get it backed in and get back to my dinner. i think people get caught up in making everything over complicated, i like to keep it simple and focus on what is the main goal, if i were gonna compete in the truck rodeo to be the best backer out there then maybe i would go about it different. but im not. i just want to use what space is available at that time and park the trailer, if you think your gonna do it perfect someday that wont happen as there are always different situations that arise while out there

Remember to get out and look it can give you a completely different view of where you need to move it next... The way I back is I envision my tractor as a big wheel on front of the trailer and I have to change the direction that wheel is facing to push the trailer into position.... If that makes no sense to you forget I mentioned it... I have been told many times by teachers that they don't understand how I get to my conclusions... Was even once told in middle school I would no longer have to explain how I got the answer to the math problems in front of class (teacher would go around and we would each explain one problem) cause even though my answer was right I was just confusing the rest of the class by how I got there

I think you're giving too much steering input. Plus, aren't you allowed two pull-ups? Steer slower and shallower (less wheel turning) and watch the ### of the trailer. You have to envision where it will end up at that particular trajectory.

You always turn INTO the problem. It's been forever since i've done cones, if ever.... but... maybe this will help if i can find it..stand by.

Scottie took a half hour to help a newbie; watch how he guides and spots him. Some peeps here pick on @scottied67 but actually he's got some educational info. See if this helps. Wishing you the best, driver. It's just second nature after so many years, that's why different trainers tell you different things........ they all have their own "theories!"
The slow and shallow as mentioned above is true, as well. You are probably over-steering...just keep plugging away at it, bro. It will be like riding a bike before too long. I can do offsets better than the straight lines anymore, but... I'd probably fail today's cone tests, anyway. Just check out some vids, and remember...slow and shallow, like ^^ he said. and turn INTO the problem.
I've never been a trainer, because it's hard to convey this stuff.
Just keep at it, and find your OWN sweet spots(s)~!!
