3/4 socket set up with a cheater bar is what I used in the old days before I bought my compressor and air tools. And this was on 10 studs and 10 wheel nuts. I remember going to a tire shop while on the road and they couldn't break them loose. He ask who tighten them last, told him I did, with my 3/4 socket set up and cheater bar. The look in his face was priceless.
I did a complete brake job on both rear axles this way. Yup.... 40 stud nuts and 40 wheels nuts.Talking about all school......

The chances of a wheel flying off because of failure to re-torque is very remote, otherwise there would be a rash of wheels flying off all over the place because you know most guys are too lazy to do that ####. You might get one nut to budge a pinch if you bring it back the next day in my experiences. If they do it right the first time cleaning the mating surfaces and putting few drops of oil on the threads nothing will move.

That's almost as dangerous as having the fasteners loosen and fall off.

We torque our lugnuts but that fact is the vast majority don't, including most shops, unless you specifically request it.

The reason we started torquing them is not to make sure they aren't loose, it's to make sure they aren't too tight. The shop guys were hammering on the 1" impact and getting them too tight. After them being hard to remove during a roadside repair and a couple of broken studs, we started torquing them.

I think it makes a better man of the guy at the tire shop.

Lol for sure but they'd probably go on strike if they had to do it old school
