I picked up a 1966 5020 john deere tractor going to the baltimore port.
The guy who loaded the thing assured me that the tractor runs and all it needs a jump or new batteris,he used a forklift.
Went home swapped the batteries, turned the key on and hit the start button,it cranked couple times than the starter just kept spinning even without me hitting the start button.
Unpluged the positive wire and when i try to plug it back it sparks really bad and the starter starts to spin non stop.
Anybody knows what im doing wrong or what i need to check?

6 volt or 12 volt batteries? Makes a difference on how you hook them up.
SAR Thanks this. -
Most likely the starter solenoid is hung in. Unhook the small wire marked S on solenoid then hook batteries up and see if it still does it. If it does pull the starter. (have fun with the back bolt) if it doesn't find where the S wire is shorted to power.
cke, Oxbow, Kenworth 4life and 2 others Thank this. -
12 v hooked in series,its a 24 v systemOxbow Thanks this.

The john deere dealer told me its a faulty solenoid, can u explain why the starter doesnt engage
-
The solenoid pushes the starter pinion into the ring gear and energizes the starter motor when it gets the signal voltage from the starter switch.
Sounds like it engaged the motor but doesn't disengage, and the pinion isn't being pushed into the ring gear.cke, Oxbow, SAR and 1 other person Thank this. -
A sharp tap with a bar or hammer can free it up? Bump it on starter not sol. to keep it looking good for oversea buyer
