They are hiring to cover a busy period then you will sit on the extra board, on call, no work, no pay. You will remain on the extra board for many years. Don't hire on with ABF.

What did all the senior drivers have to go through to get where they are now?

It's better than getting laid off during slow period and getting a chance to come back when it gets busy again but you go at the bottom again like some other LTL companies do.

A lot of the layoffs depend on where the terminal is located. If big breakbulks over hire and freight levels drop significantly, it means lots of waiting by the phone. If those same large breaks keep staffing under control and freight stays the same or increases a bit, the results are runs for everyone.

Business fluctuations and hiring processes also affect end of the line terminals, sometimes in greater proportion than the breakbulks.

ABF is a premier LTL job, IF you can survive the early years. Seniority only sucks if you don't have any.

Yup a lot of drivers had to sit but not all. I guess the point I'm making is if a person is able to survive 3-4 months a year sitting by the phone then ok. Eventually in 6-8 years you won't have to worry about it. You can file for unemployment and you do get your medical paid unless they lay you off. As long as you are available then your medical benefits continue. As far as the premium LTL maybe so but not as good
as they use to be. They also use outside carriers to haul freight while you sit at home something the senior guys never had to deal with.

You hit the nail on the head. This isn't a horrible place just don't hire in here and plan any major purchases for at least 5 years. Remember NO vacation until your 3rd year, 5 paid sick days and 7 paid holidays. Start at 90% pay go to 100% after a year. So yes seniority is everything but it's taking longer to reap the benefit and that depends a lot on what area of the country and size of terminal. So you may call this "premier" I don't. Overall not
a bad group but it's obvious they are changing their business model which is making it increasingly difficult for many drivers to stick it out long enough to reap the benefits of seniority.

Nope if you don't quit you maintain your seniority. Retirement is vested after 5 years.

I'm talking about how lay offs work at some other LTLs.

Old Dominion in particular. You get laid off it's no different than getting fired but being eligible for rehire.

My point is it can be better but it can be worse.
With most LTLs though you will be most likely waiting on the phone during slow season when you're at the bottom. It is the nature of the beast.
