Hey guy! I've been driving for about 2 months now! Just was curious.... I understand all companies don't care, also I understand most people don't care. My question, Is Tarping your load off duty illegal? If you do it that not what I'm asking in particular; I'm just wanting to know if its illegal to do so while off duty.
This is a rookie question but I was just curious to see what would be said.

Thanks you all! I do appreciate your feedback!

It is not illegal to do while you are off duty.
It is illegal to log off duty while you are doing it.

It's illegal to drive 70 in a 65 or 60 in a 55, but many thousands of truck drivers do it every day. So this is where we decide to get all "legal eagle"? ... Do what you want driver. I promise I won't drop a dime on you but I can't speak for some of the others.

If they require you to tarp the load, then it should be logged as on duty, However if you decide you need the exercise and no one else requiring you to tarp it, then its off duty. The company I drive for never requires us to tarp, if the driver wants to he can, so we log it off duty, personal exercise dont ya know

In reality minus all the half answers here, dot will tell you it must be logged in duty. However in the interest of being able to get the job done, you do it how you feel it should be. I know from my experience, if I logged every single minute on duty like I'm supposed to, I'd run out of hours sooner, and I'd never get anywhere.
