I have had my authority twice now. First time I didn't have a lot of driving experience and was able to get Progressive at a good rate. When they jacked the rate up I dropped my authority and went to work with a carrier that allowed self-dispatch. Did really good with them but the itch to do it my self was still there.
So I tired it again. Insurance was higher but doable with what I learned and relationships I developed with carrier. But now I am seeing insurance creep up again. No longer with Progressive, GW, but anyone seeing premium creep?
I don't need to be a $200k gross producer. With the rates going up I am at almost 12% of my gross last year. I could go back and lease to my old company at 80% and do the same things for a lot less hassle.
Thoughts?

Hey John, been a bit. I feel your pain. Thinking of scratching this "dream" and going back to running for a carrier.

Trying to get my own authority Truck, financing, and insurance ready to come together Monday morning. DOT and MC updated.
I just read through the IRP requirements. D A M N !!! Thank god I spotted a requirement they didn't have last time I had authority 13 yrs ago. I'd be making payments on a truck I couldn't use.
New requirement. ESTABLISHED PLACE OF BUSINESS must be manned by a manager during regular business hours. WHAT !!!!! It specifically states I can't just have a receptionist or mechanic, person must be a manager !!!!! ASKING: How do you get around that if you're a small 1 truck operation??????
How do you get around that or do you hire someone ???
My truck dealer, insurance guy, and finance guy are gonna be pissed Monday if I tell them everything stops now ! -
That's just a bunch of BS. I was worried about that too. As long as you have a verifiable address in the state you are registering your truck in you'll be OK. They give you a list of 6 or 7 acceptable items and as long as you have 3 of them you're golden. I gave them a utility bill, a vehicle registration for my personal vehicle and my driver's license. I had to get a new license before they would accept it because it had an old address on it so that held me up. Of everything, the biggest hassle for me getting set up was the IRP Plate. Took me 3 trips there till I got it. I also had to drive 3 hours to Raleigh to get my IFTA sticker. (I live in Charlotte, NC) What state are you in?IndianaF150 Thanks this.

If they let me do my own dispatch, I would not care that much about the authority.
But 20%? So let's say that you realistically gross 150K then it is 30K a year for keeping your logbooks in order and providing you with insurance and perhaps avoiding factoring. 20% is too much, if you ask me. Insurance should drop within two years to 10K or less. I am making a hell of less money now than this time last year when I was forced dispatch, but I could not stand them telling me go here or go there. Having said that, for me it is all about being able to decide when, where and for how much, my name and MC# signs on the truck doors is secondary.LandslideRich Thanks this. -
20% is not bad. I think it is well worth that and competitive with being independent in the time and money spent but they better be providing a trailer for that 20%, paying all cargo & liability from that with no chargebacks to the o/o, offering substantial fuel discounts of 30-40 cents per gallon off pump prices, and paying promptly.

Texas has that list too, but it requires a manager be at the location during normal biz hrs, can't be a receptionist, must be a guy in charge. I'm gonna call IRP in morning.

The Applicant or Registrant need not have land line telephone service at the physical structure.
