"Noticed This About Trucks"...

Ok, if the meters read how much light passes through, the regs posted say the standard is 70% transmittance. You're saying NY says 35% (35%?!?!? can you see through that?!?!). So you could be legal in NY but not federally.

When you start talking about this stuff, you have to be very careful to specify transmittance or absorbance. I saw a lot of chemistry students get those questions wrong because they just put a percentage and didn't specify.

 

30% means that the tint is allowing 30% of the light in & 35% is letting 35% of the light. The lower the number, the darker the window.

New York State law is nothing "less then 70%". Which is saying that you can block up to 70% of the light but no more. This means that your tint can allow in 30% of the light in but only allowing 29% of the light in would be illegal. If there's a separate law for New York City, I haven't found it yet.

New York State: section 375 article 12

(b) No person shall operate any motor vehicle upon any public highway road or street:

(1) the front windshield of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent unless such materials are limited to the uppermost six inches of the windshield; or
(2) the sidewings or side windows on either side forward of or adjacent to the operator's seat are composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or
(3) if it is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible and any rear side window has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or (4) the rear of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent. A rear window may have a light transmittance of less than seventy percent if the vehicle is equipped with side mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so adjusted that the driver thereof shall have a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic behind such vehicle

 

I keep the windows dark on everything I drive. So far nothing has been said and I get pulled over by DOT almost weekly. Not saying its legal.. because I knooow my tint is way too dark. Even for 4 wheeler standards...
