YOU GUYS SHOULD TRY EUROPEAN TRUCKING.
WE'RE GOVERNED BY LAWS FROM EUROPE, GOT TO RUN TO TACHOGRAPH REGS WHICH FORTUNATLY YOU AIN'T GOT AND IF WE WORK OVER OUR DRIVING HOURS WE GET HIT WITH BIG FINES FROM EITHER THE FRENCH, GERMAN OR BELGIAN COPS
AND IF WE DON'T GET BOOKED BY THOSE CLAMPETS WE GOT THE TRANSPORT ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN ENGLAND TO FACE.
SOMETIMES IS IT WORTH IT TO LEAVE NORTHEN IRELAND TO FACE THIS CRAP.
BUT SURE, DOESNT IT MAKE LIFE MORE COLORFUL WHEN YOU KNOW THAT MOST OF THE TIME YOU'VE BEATEN THE SYSTEM:biggrin_25519:

Back to the OP; Why do we do it?

Hmmm.... cuz we're too proud for welfare?

Seriously, though, although I no longer do it, I racked up over a million and a quarter miles in my career and I miss it every day. For a real driver a hand, that is, it isn't something you just do, it's what and who you are. Unfortunately, so many of today's new drivers are steering wheel holders, as was mentioned previously. They couldn't find a consignee or a fuel stop without their Qualcomm. Now, before some of you sensitive types get your feelings hurt, notice I said many, not all.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I've maintained my connections in the industry. If something were to happen to my current job, even though it's been seven years, it would take no more than a phone call and I would have a good job without being told "You've been off the road too long. You need to start over." More likely I'd hear, "Where you been and what took you so long to get back to it?". I will never let my CDL go.
