Today was an odd day for me. I love this job, like none other I've had before. But there are days, as with any job, where the days just draaaaag. It doesn't happen often for me here, but it did today. Every mile and minute passed so slowly. Thank god for podcasts. My delivery went as smooth as possible with this receiver. I deadheaded to Cartersville and I'm taking a load to Trenton. Beautiful easy run. Got my paperwork done, slid into 2nd Half for some food, and I'm going to take advantage of the brand new showers here. It doesn't get better than that. Hope you all had a great day. Talk to y'all tomorrow.

Sorry guys, I reread that post. It's about as lame as it gets, I know. I am really distracted at the moment, which is probably why the time passed so slowly today. It's a side effect of the job. Lots of time to be alone in your head. Not necessarily a bad thing. It's handy for being in a place where you can think your way through a problem or whatever, but it makes you feel like a dingbat. If I haven't mentioned the food at this place before, I will now correct that. It's awesome, and good for the soul. Probably not for the arteries. But, you can walk here in about 5 minutes from the terminal. You can't live on health shakes and kale alone. That was a joke, I do neither. Ask for Wanda if she's around. Awesome service. I'm feeling both homesick and nostalgic at the moment, so it's probably best if I just sign off. See you guys on the flip side.

Steelersjunkie, I hope you can keep up your enthusiasm for the job for many years to come. I see so many of these post that guys start out like you do and quickly change their attitude, to no fault of their own. I think your doing a great job keepin people informed and I hope your attitude can stay positive, thanks for the interesting read. There's nothing more important then doing what you love,

    Be safe driver

Thank you for the kind words :) I agree with you, there are plenty of folks out there who don't seem to enjoy this profession very much. I think a lot of it has to do with their environment. At least that's my guess. I am always talking to other truckers on the road, and there are definitely some unhappy folks. The complaints I hear from some of them are just shocking. I'm betting I'd be pretty unsatisfied as well if I had to put up with some of the things they do. Personally, I don't have any complaints. Except for idiot drivers, but that won't change no matter who I'm driving for. So, if you're picking up on a positive vibe from me, it's probably just because I really don't have anything to complain about. I wouldn't mind a faster truck, so that I can eliminate slow passes, but that's it. Everything runs fairly smooth for me, which goes a long way towards job satisfaction. As for keeping people informed, I hope I really am doing that for folks. Sometimes it feels like I'm just babbling. But if people find anything I say helpful, then mission accomplished :) That was always my goal. And I've met and talked to some really nice folks along the way. That makes it all worth it.

Today was pretty good, for the most part. Traffic was relatively decent, except for some small hangups around Knoxville and Lexington. My load was supposed to be a drop at the Trenton drop lot. However, the guys at the yard asked that I take it to the brewery instead. Not a major deal except for the extra time that I wasn't counting on. That added about an hour. I bobtailed to the terminal, where there was another load waiting for me. This one is going to Pennsylvania, due tomorrow afternoon. I am pre-planned on another trip after that which loads further east of my drop, and will take me to Illinois for Monday morning. Gotta love Opie on the pre-plans, that's my dude :) By the way, the new bathrooms and showers at Cartersville are awesome. Thank you for that Mr. Millis. That was an unbelievable improvement. Seems to me that the water pressure and temperature are much better as well. Very nicely done, and much appreciated! I'm gonna have to keep this post short, I need to keep my schedule tight for tomorrow. Time for some zzz's while I can still grab some. Catch y'all tomorrow, be safe out there.

Lol. To be fair though, I'd have a complaint or two about being hung :)

Taking pride in one's work is always to be commended, especially since it's something so seldom seen anymore.

@Steelersjunkie, the best way to keep that is to avoid the malcontents at any cost, both here AND in person. Misery loves company.

We have planty like that, who would even complain about what color the trucks are. They're the ones that have to be constantly reminded that doing your job IS actually part of your job.

I agree. It is all about what you make of a situation. There is a lot you can complain about this line of work. As Mack E-6 said.
It is different than when I started in 2003. The DOT/FMCSA started changing rules around 2005 (If I am not mistaken). The rules previously had for the most part been unchanged for 60+ years. There were some changes back in the late 70's and into the 80's. Between 2005 and 2010 a lot changes happened. You want to talk about complaining! LoL

I might forget some because it is has been to long and to many. It is use to be 14 hour day. You could extend it by being in the sleeper or off duty on your logs. You could drive 10 hours with an 8 hour break. You could reset your 70 by being off duty for 7 days. Every one was on paper with the exception of Werner Enterprises. They were one if not the first to use e-logs. This like I said between 2005 and 2007 the FMCSA changed quite a bit. They extended the sleeper berth to 10 hours. Driving time was extended to 11 hours. I think in '07 they made the 14 hour rule non extendable. In that same year they added the 34 hour reset. The FMCSA also changed many of the fines for compliance. They made it so both the driver and the company were responsible. They sort of followed the insurance industry. Where a points system was created. That would remain with you for 3 years. I think it was long for companies but I can't remember. That also included the addition of the employment verification. I think the official name is Driver Pre-screening. It use to be. All you did was fill out the application with your 10 years of history. Along with your address and etc. All the companies would do is check your MVR. Some would check your DAC report. As long as your MVR was clean. You were hired. Some times in the same day. I can remember calling a company on Friday. On Tuesday or Wednesday I would already be going down the road with their truck. All depended on when they got the drug screen results.
Then the fair majority of the 'big' carriers switched over to E-Logs. That was a baptismal of compliance right there. Many dispatch and planning departments finally realized. How long some of these load REALLY took to deliver. I can remember explaining to my fleet manager. That a 65 mph truck can not travel 1,000 miles in 11 hours. ;)

You want to talk about complaining!!! Between those years. You couldn't sit down in the CDL area of the truck stop restaurant and not hear hundreds of complaints. LoL My favorite complaint I heard during that time was. "Ten hour break????? I can't sleep 10 hours!" I would just think to my self. It doesn't say you have sleep for 10 hours. Just don't drive the truck for 10 hours.

I would say around 2008-2009 during the economic down hill. The industry saw an intake of office/blue collar people. That led to a whole new round of complaining. Which is why I love MACK E-6's quote about doing the job is part of the job. I think a fair majority of them didn't know what they were in for. That was partially the fault of improper training.

@Steelersjunkie you have a great attitude about the job. Keep it up. If you can get over the weeks away from home. The rest of the job is just a very long commute to work. :) After almost 14 years. I have remained mostly positive about it. If there is something I don't like. I will either find the silver lining or make a change for the better.
