    How long is the actual test? Is it actually split into sections like General Knowledge Air Brakes and combinations etc or is it all crammed together?

    Iowa,whether the first time or the fifth time .Once you pass you pay for the test but unill you pass you go in the DMV and take the test for free.

    It's free at DMV but if I go to a tax collector I'd have to pay $6 for the permit itself once passed

    Well ya.DMV isn't going to just give you the permit once you pass the required tests.

    No, the permit is free in Florida. Tax collectors charge a tax, which is $6.
