My husband went to York Technical College in Rock Hill S.C. he then drove for Watkins and Shepard for 6 months and got out of it after that because he was really only getting about $5 an hour with them.
Long story short he turned in his CDL-A to the DOT he didn't know he didn't need to turn it in if he didn't have his DOT med card and he is looking to get back into trucking. Where is the best and cheapest option to be able to get his CDL-A again?

How long since he's driven with a CDL? Lot of changes in the last couple of years.

Its been since September 2013 so about 31/2 years. Is this good or bad?

Does not matter.

They will rent practice time by the hour, usually $50 to $100 an hour.

Maybe not.

As Loose Leaf posted, he can pass the driving part easy; that's something we never forget. He'll need a valid DOT physical card though plus the rental truck. Some states are sticklers on the pre-trip inspection and fail drivers for that before they even get to the road test.MidwestResident Thanks this.

He can act as self examiner but that will limit him to intrastate until he get med card then he can upgrade to interstate.
But yes- he will have to have all writen test before he can do a pre-trip or road test.
My state makes you wait 14 days after writen befor you can take a road test. -
Another option is to just start over in school. Some companies will reimburse his tuition or even just pay for school then hire him. Tankers is where the money is and CTL Transportation is one that will pay tuition and give him a good paying job.
Schneider Bulk will also pay for cdl school if he agrees to pull tankers for a year. There's good money in tankers and most tanker driver make over $60K.
Roehl Transport will actually pay him $500.00 weekly to attend their cdl school. They're the only company that pays their students a salary while attending school.
