There are MANY variables here. Depends on your truck, terrain, other radio traffic, and all kinds of other things. 20W should go pretty far on a good day, in good terrain, and if other radio traffic is low, etc...Just don't get caught as CBs are only supposed to have 4W by law...

I'll bet that 20 was peak power, divide that in half and that's what you're probably really running. Which in that case I don't think is really "illegal". CB's usually come set up with a 4 watt dead key and a 10-12 watt swing.

Just today I was on I-280 in Livingston, NJ and was talking to a guy that said I was loud and clear when he was at the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, NJ which is at least 22 miles, doe's this sound right?

If I get 20 miles out of my radio I'M happy...

on a good day with good weather and low traffic, 20 miles isn't unheard of...I don't get that with 200 watts some days LOL!

With my 10 meter rig using 25 watts and a hamstick I talked to
Portugal from my truck. That was back when the band was good.

In summer, under the right atmospheric conditions (a situation called "sporadic E", when strong sunlight causes a conductive layer in the lower atmosphere to form), radiowaves in the CB range can be reflected quite far. I had contacts about 1000 miles away from my location during such situations using a standard 4W CB radio on FM.
