What is the general rule for securing 40' steel pipe to the trailer? diameter of the pipe is 6". Do I throw a strap every three layers, or every 2. I cant find anything in the fmcsa cargo securement guide or in the regulations. I will be hauling about 10 layers. the total height of the load will be 12' 5".

How many straps you got? Ideally you'd want 2 straps over each layer and then at least 5 over the top. That's 23 straps and more straps then most people carry though. I'd probably do 2 over every 2 layers then 5 or 6 over the top which would be 16 straps.

The point of a belly strap is to squeeze each layer together so there is tension on the middle pipes. A belly wrap is better then this but you'd need 40 to 50 ft straps for the top layers. So belly straps are a happy medium.

Two straps or three on every layer.

Tension the middle first. Then the ends. Especially your ### end. If any of them work loose it's going to do it on the #### ### end first. Then flop out and drag on the pavement or hook and snare yourself under the spreads.

20 plus straps Im thinking on this job. 4 to a layer all the way up. 24 total. A few chain over the top of everything for good measure as a final backup.

Your way would be at least 24, you need 6 over the top layer minimum then two over the other 9 layers is 24.

How so? For length you need 2 in the first 10 ft. Then one for each additional 10 ft. That makes 5. For wll assuming the load is 48k lbs you need 24k lbs worth of securement. That's 5 straps for wll.

Now granted I'd throw every strap I can at this load and would probably have 9 over the top for 100% wll. I try not to count belly towards my wll for no other reason then it gives me a warm fuzzy.

    Unless I'm missing Something.

Sounds like a nightmare of a load. Maybe they have it bundled. Surely the crew has loaded it before and my just have to ask them what they've done in the past.

It's actually not that bad. I don't ever want one of those lowes/home Depot loads going to a store. It's got latter's and all sorts of loose different shaped items on the trailer. Not even shrink wrapped together.

40 foot 6 straps, I would say you could get away with 5 but they'll try to hang you on the fraction there of.
