Had an interesting morning yesterday. I was hauling a composite tank up right on a double drop. The load could not be laid down due to the way it was designed. Overall height of vehicle and load was 14 foot and 10 ft 2 wide. Got my truck rigged up for oversize and was provided the route from MDOT. As I get into Detroit on the interstate, the road narrows, twists, and the shoulder is replaced by concrete walls. Bridges are coming up and I'm checking the heights! Good, close, close, 13 ft 10 in!!!!

Did I miss my turn? Did I go off route?

Hit the brakes, turn on the flashers, CB incoming traffic, and call 911. MDOT shows up and closes up an on-ramp but it's overwhelmed with the interstate traffic. Finally the state police arrive. All seven of them! They shut down the interstate, and let me back up onto the on ramp. From there on they shut down an intersection and I backed into that as well to a service drive. After much interrogation of my permit and route they deem that I committed no offense. However a good level 2 inspection what is the results since two of the seven troopers were from the commercial vehicle department. One of them was dressed in coveralls just itching to crawl underneath something.

Always look ahead for bridge Heights. No matter what. Even if the route was deemed clear.

What was the height of bridge when you measured it.
The surprise was you seen the low bridge. Good job.

I didn't measure the bridge. It was decided to dodge traffic lights and take a off permit route to receiver 3 miles away.

    I used to run a route in Illinois , I think highway 47 or 20, had a bridge marked 13' 10" that I ran a 14' 2" under for years.

Mi has always been bad about rting on hgt. Ask for a rtr and they will give it to you, read the disclaimer. You are tge one responsible for clearing said rte. Goid catch though

I only had trouble in Detroit once. They closed the interstate in my face with cones and signs in about maybe 300 yards on all lanes around a curve. There I was processing the mental oh *&^% and taking too long to do it waffling... I finally took the ramp. The problem was I acted too late. The ramp presented to me a 3 foot concrete ramp curbing butress to my entire tractor trailer. I committed myself to God before impact. The entire rig went air borne and slammed onto the ramp proper upgrade. The fuel tanks were like air bags and the damage to them pretty much saved the entire truck which instantly developed a 5 figure shop bills worth of problems in addition to freight OSD.

I consider that one a win because I did not wreck it too badly. But as far as the details? Forget it. I wrote that off as a really bad day during a time Detriot was losing money hand over fist and refused to properly lay out the required advance notices etc.

Ohio troopers are usually tough on truckers, but, one time I had a oversize crate on out of Baltimore going to Chicago.Somewhere around 14'2 high IIRC,around the same width on my RGN.Had a single escort for the width. Was routed off I-70 onto US40 going through Vandalia Ohio.Tipped a traffic light going through town, apparently a municipal worker saw me hit it,called local police.Local cop stops me on way out of town.Wants me to pay for damage.I said no,if you have a problem, you'll have to take it up with the state. They routed me,and I'm the dimensions stated on the permit.Even took my tape and showed him.Cop got in a huff, called a State Trooper to come straighten me out.Ohio Trooper shows up,reads my permit,I show him my height with the tape. The Trooper says to the local cop, you're wrong, the the trucker is right, got in his car and left.I was even dumfounded that the Trooper was on my side.Local cop still wanted my company information,I refused, and left.
About a month later,Vandalia sent a bill for a couple of hundred to my company I was leased to.I explained what happened, they threw the bill in the trash, never heard anymore.Sometimes the OhioTroopers are the good guys!

Well you got lucky, because it still your responsibility to make sure you can clear overhead obstructions regardless of permit routing at least in Ohio.
