    Name your favorite "alternative" CDL driving job that I may not have heard of.

    Example: a barber job requiring a CDL or a CDL is "preferred" ( I understand that's quite the fabricated example but you get the picture)

    Some that I have held over the years;
    CDL Third Party Examiner/Driving Instructor
    Heavy Truck Mechanic
    Truck Salesman (my current favorite)
    Towing Equipment Product Specialist/Demonstrator for major manufacturer (my other current favorite)
    Transportation Safety Manager (had to have cdl for road testing drivers in case I had to drive back)
    Subject Matter Expert (Expert Witness in court, needed cdl as proof of relevancy of testimony)
    Lineman/Electrician/Cable Layer (drove a cdl bucket/pole truck to/from jobsites)
    Foreman on Pipeline/Utility Crew, non-union (our foremen had to be fully job qualified)

    Depends on where you are and what you consider good money. Some states pay their cdl examiners well, Pennsylvania pays about 50k a year plus full benefits including state pension, which is not bad for a 4 day work week and all holidays off. Union electrician/Lineman with a cdl is about an 80k a year job, but it takes years to work up from apprentice thru journeyman and master levels. Not to mention lots of bad weather on-call or travel to remote job sites and being away from home for weeks at a time.
    Truck sales can easily be over 100k a year, if you are in the right area, are good at talking to people, deal with rejection well, and know trucks inside and out. Pay is even better if you sell a niche product, I currently sell heavy duty tow trucks and car carriers, so I have a limited market but also a decent profit margin and little competition. Now with that said, sales is very cyclic so you may have a great month or year once then a really bad period next, you need to save for the bad times.
