That tractor must have stopped dead instantly to hop that front end loader onto the tractor. Those things generally have about 51,000 pounds to start off.

One other thing I forgot to mention.

Straps. you need to put some form of protection between the strap and what it is holding.

I have seen straps cut clean by 2X4s

My only guess would be that he didnt use strong enough chain,.. maybe just 2 points on the rear using just 3/8 chain. Jam on the brakes and there is no way the chains will hold. Chains have a WLL rating for a reason.

What could've been done to stop the beams from coming through the cab in the second pic?

Chains instead of straps. If you look he had nothing but straps on the load. If you look at the 2 straps at the front that are still there he has no edge protection.

When he slammed the brakes the beams slid a bit, tightened the straps and then the sharp edges sliced right through them.

Had he used at least a few chains they would have rolled as the steel started to slide. When chains roll or twist they get tighter. The chains would have tightened and clamped down on those beams.

Drugs and flat bedding don't mix imo... can't believe you found a company willing to take the risk... good luck

I'm going to take a guess and say with it being a day cab it was a local move. The guy probably figured he's only going a short distance so only partial securement was all he wanted to do. Didn't feel like slinging all the necessary chains just to have to take them off a few miles later. Unfortunately for him he'll never make that mistake again.

    Thanks. That makes sense.

I've heard people say the customer might not want chains on the load, if that was the case here would you have went ahead & pulled it or refused it?

If they want straps only then I would have Just added a couple extra at the front. Those cut straps could have been avoided if he had used edge protection. I use 1/4" thick rubber pieces cut from an old conveyor belt for my edge protection on straps. Along with being nice and flexible they also give the straps a bit more grip on steel.

Eyes and ears open, mouth closed. The guy that goes about his work quietly and efficiently is the guy that knows what is going on.

    The loudmouth is an idiot.
