Did my year and some months, mostly OTR.

I have no desire to lease purchase. All the L/P plans I've seen look terrible.

    So, this is my goal:

    1) Finance a used tractor through a local dealership.

    2) Get my authority/ MC number OR Lease on with a company that lets me choose my runs. Ultimately, I want to go out 600 miles, deliver and back haul twice a week. 2200-2400 miles/ week, 2-3 nights a week in the bunk.

    These are my questions:

    1) is it realistic to believe I can run out and back twice a week while leased to a company? I'm in a great area (Greensboro, NC.)

    2) How much can I expect to pay out for insurance?

    3) How much out of pocket to set up my authority/ MC number, etc.?

    4) Is it reasonable to expect to pay $35-40k for a tractor that will last long enough to pay it off and pocket some good money?

Finally, I'm a no-nonsense driver. I stop for red lights and fuel. Right now I'm driving local and I hate the down time and the low pay.

    Thanks for help.

1 try to find one from private owner, 2 it depends on the amount of the truck. if you lease on to someone or if you do your own authority with only one year good luck getting insurance and if you do it will be really expensive, 3 there are a lot of cost to get authority filing with fmcs $300 boc 3 $75 drug consortium and you have to have insurance in place before you get authority,4you will need at least 20 grand to pay bills, truck breakdowns ,fuel, plates.

So, lease purchase at a company for a year then go for lower insurance rates?

Well, if I have to drive another year before my insurance drops, I don't want to do it local for crap pay.

At the same time, I do not want to drive OTR for a starter.

    I feel stuck.

A driver posted yesterday, he bought a truck and now can't leave the dealership with it because he can't find insurance he can afford. This happens fairly often.

Get a line haul job; terminal to terminal in most cases. Drop & hook then back to Greensboro.
    Southeastern Freight Lines
    Saia
    Estes Express
    R&L Carriers

Epes Transport might have what you want for owner-operator.
Miller Transporters has lease-purchase if you want tankers.

What do you mean low pay for local work, I thought that the local worked paid better than OTR?

Saia offers free insurance after 10 years as well and the run my dad was on paid about 70k/year. .5125/mile 524 miles a night $9/drop and hook $36 just in drop pay plus detention and break down it was a good gig but it had its moments as well I suppose.
