Trucker Traps Cargo Thief In Refrigerated Trailer Until Cops Arrive
A truck driver trapped a cargo thief inside his refrigerated trailer at a rest stop in Indiana, early Monday morning.
It happened at the eastbound rest area on Interstate 74 near Batesville around 4:15 a.m.
According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, the truck driver, Joel Schumacer of Hanska, Minnesota, was parked at the rest area and heard noises coming from his trailer. When he realized that his load was being robbed, he quickly locked the trailer doors, trapping the suspect inside.![]()
The refrigerated trailer was -10 degrees and loaded with frozen meat.
According to the Batesville Herald Tribune, when officers arrived at the scene, they heard the suspect, 51-year-old Malcom Denton, banging on the trailer door to get out.
Denton was arrested and taken to Ripley County Jail. He was charged with felony theft and unauthorized entry of a vehicle, a misdemeanor.

I don't think many are aware of how little "movements" at the back of a trailer are usually felt up in the sleeper even when in a deep sleep. But he's probably learned which carriers typically haul meats and other worthwhile foods, and which seals to look for that offer the best pickings. He's probably ripped off lots of cases from more than one at that same rest area.
He should probably stick with dry canned goods in the future, just in case he's lost his cat-like stealth forever.ramblingman, BigTennOTR, Shock Therapy and 4 others Thank this. -
Makes you wonder why a frozen meat load was not locked....mmmm..
Glad they got the idiot though!Klleetrucking, Shock Therapy and Toomanybikes Thank this. -

You can still get locked in a dry van... and especially in summer, you'll wish you were locked in a reefer...

Lots of fleets use a "company lock" and eventually a key will end up in a theif's hands and finding and/or waiting for those trucks is pretty easy.
But regardless, always use a GOOD quality lock and make them ruin their bolt cutters and show up with considerable strength or make them show up with big, expensive "super-cutters".EZ Money and Shock Therapy Thank this. -
Problem is, he'll be back out on the street shortly, if not already...

Those "big, expensive 'super-cutters'" cost about $15 more than the locks which demand them, at Harbor Freight... it's an arms race, and security always loses. If the lock is sufficiently awesome, then how good is the hasp? The hinges? The door? A smarter thief would have waited for the driver to head for the showers...
Shock Therapy Thanks this. -
His bond was probably less than the price of the power saw that he will bring with him into the next trailer...
Shock Therapy Thanks this.
