The guy isn't going to die in the time it takes from the point you lock him in there until the cops arrive. Providing you don't do a little justice of your own and let him sweat for a good long while before calling. If you were in an area where cops are stretched very thin (detroit) and they take a while to respond... Maybe let him sit in there until the pounding on the door stops for a while and as long as he hasn't shot any holes through the walls open it and ask him if he's had enough time to think about what he's done. Any crabby answer? Give him another hour.

For what it's worth a new carrier 7500 has a low set point of -22f.

Nope, I did my pre-trip, found the door open, looked inside, didn't see anything, closed and locked the door.......

15 bucks at Harbor Freight defeats any lock regardless of the quality.

Sure, if stealth is not a concern, then there's little you can do to deter those who are determined and highly motivated to take what's not theirs. However for rest area and truck stop thefts, a good lock will make the difference between getting jacked or not, especially if your trailer only has a plastic seal to bypass, as opposed the good lock on the neighbor's trailer.
