A happy medium is a good way to put it. I always prefer the reliability of good old fashion brass fittings with ferules, but sometimes you just don't have enough room.
@Tug Toy KW probably uses the same crap as Peterbilt, they are SMC brand fittings with a plastic collar from the factory. I've changed more of those fittings on our new Pete's than I care to count. Get a truck that you can see lose 20 PSI in a half hour and can't hear any leaks, we even have one of the electronic head phone leak detectors. Use soapy water on all the connections and 1/2 of them have tiny bubbles. 40-50 tiny leaks add up to a pretty big one that you can't hear.Tug Toy and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
I will buy some from tifco as soon as they approve my account. In the mean time I am using the full brass ones that I can buy locally. Problem is the selection is sparse and they are expensive. $10 bucks for a 1/2 pipe to 1/2 air one... My local shop has those push in ones with the plastic collar under the velvac brand, not using them.

Next issue - trying to remove the jic fittings that are installed in the aluminum air distribution block in the pete. They are brass and are in there tight. Been there 40 years. Afraid I will break one off trying to get it out. There is a mix of 1/4 and 3/8 fittings in the block. Wanting a clean install by removing them and replacing with a plastic pipe fitting. I guess I could get some adapters that convert jic female to npt female but that is not my preference.
Update - got one of these 3/8 ones out and saw that there is no corrosion present. So I got a larger wrench and put a bit more pressure on the 1/4 in one that was stopping me and got it to move. So now on with the rework...Last edited: Apr 20, 2017
