I have had a few brokered loads. When I show up to load. OH by the way, Did I mention you need to tarp. OR. Driver will just take a few minutes to tarp its only a couple feet tall. Ya sure. with 10,000 pins and rods sticking out. Takes 3 hours to pad.
That is why you have drivers leaving. The broker doesn't send the pictures to the driver. With the cheap rate He isn't going to tarp.
Sooner or later broker gets lucky with the driver that feels his word is his word. He committed to load and will do what it takes to get it done.
I prefer chains on steel. I feel it holds better in a braking situation.

Personally, I would have chained it first to prevent fwd and aft movement, and then strapped it too, over the dunnage and under the tarp. Big pieces of machinery and equipment travelling at highway speeds tend to want to keep on truckin during a hard braking, thus making for one a very bad day....Friction, what friction, it doesn't apply at that point in time, as it's too late. Make no mistake, straps have their place, for sure, just think about what you're securing.

As I said, if it paid decent and wasn't going to CA, we would be hauling it. I don't know what it's paying but I can bet it's dirt cheap, just based on the caliber of drivers I'm getting. That and from my experience, almost all broker loads are cheap rates.
I tried to get a friend of mine who does go to CA and knows what he's doing to haul some of it but they laughed at his rate.
We've got two more flatbed loads tomorrow and I should be done with them. Luckily, both of them are small crates and pallets and shouldn't be a issue, as long as they just show up.
Another problem I've been having is none of them are US citizens. We are working in a government contractor facility, the guards get really up tight when a non-citizen tries to come on the property. It's a bunch of more paperwork and some have to be escorted by guards the whole time if they don't answer the questions asked like they want.Last edited: Apr 21, 2017

You're not quite a shipper, but it's refreshing to hear the other half of the story. And also nice to hear you actually care about the load getting there safely plus the driver living,
I wonder (I can guess) how many shippers don't give one fat poop as long as it's off their property. -

Throwing a tarp over and then strapping is the lazy stick and brick hauler's way. The very first thing I would look for is a way to do a 4 point direct, and then a couple over the top. Guarantee it won't move.
If you can't get a direct securement, you can still get your forward and rear pull on that piece.
I'd wager that broker sucked all the money out of the load and found some guys who will pull for $.85/mile to get back to ca.Bo Hunt, SAR, Short Fuse EOD and 13 others Thank this. -
Your wrong and you sound lazy. I'd rather use chains than straps any day.

My take away from all this is. If a customer request you to tie something down a certain way, just do it. Make them happy and as long as it's not less secure.
Will it make it, more than likely. A couple chains on the front and rear wouldn't hurt.
The point is the lack of professionalism. You take a job. Do it to the point all involved are happy, and think you were a pleasure to deal with. -
Lol I loved the friction comment. In order to have friction you need movement. You do not want movement. Straps will not prevent that thing from doing a barrel roll. That would bother me more than it would sliding forward.
I would have so much jewelry on that thing you would think it was a mobile Shane Company store. -
