I met with Rex last night wanting to be considered for a Terminal Manager for a new terminal he is opening. After the meetings I am considering being a company driver. The man was very impressive. To start a company in the middle of a rescission and coming out strong than the competition is a testimony of the American Dream.

I have a very good job that allows me to be home everyday and after 4-5 hours with Rex have really been considering my options.

I'm a little late to the party here, but...
The boss man hauls a lot for Wheeler out of Avon Lake, they are a 1st rate outfit..
I do some work for them out of Avon not nearly as much as he does....A good bit of what I do is out of Curtis Bay...

Never any issues they are straight with us which is rare now a days..

Kersey and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this.

Update. I have been at Wheeler going on my third week. The strangest thing I have ever done is to drive a truck up onto another truck and wait while someone set a slide that allows me to drive farther up onto the first truck.

As for the company, 3/4 of the drivers here are owner operators and most company drivers wind up buying truck. Wheeler pays the O/O the same 20% the company drivers get and allows them the same payroll taxes, health insurance, bonuses (3%-7% for safety and production) and 401k (dollar for dollar too 5% vested day one) that the company drivers get, then pays the owner a 45% equipment usage. Than after a year they offer base plate programs and aniversary bonuses.

I am three weeks in so still in the honeymoon phase. But pretty impressed with what I have seen so far.

That is a great looking rig. When you unload do you use your own ramps to back off the unit below it?

Yes, the trailer has everything you need to load and unload. No hoist or cranes needed. Drive the units on, stack them, and drive them off when you get to where you going.

Well it's been about a month since I posted so I feel obligated to update the latest.

This is the hardest job I have ever had in my life. See guys here that have been loading these since the early 90's and make it look just plan easy and get told everyday that it will come. But since I started I am down 34 pounds and have no need for a gym membership.

Pay wise I haven't qualified for bonuses yet but that's coming. Bounds for no claims, not bad DOT inspections, and production, can add up too 7% more onto my check. You are paid percentage of revenue hauled and there is a lot of deadhead but all miles counted I make more than any freight company is offering by at least half again and I haven't seen the first bonus yet...
