Look at the federal guidelines for securing the type and quantity of stuff you'll be hauling, and have AT LEAST that. Extras never hurt.
Loads vary, though. I don't hotshot...currently pulling a 48' flat T/T...but I've had loads where 6 straps fulfill the "legal" requirements, and loads that took 15+ straps before I was satisfied that it met all of the securement requirements for the jumbled assortment of stuff stacked on the deck. It all depends upon what you are hauling, and how much of it you plan to put on the deck. Nobody can answer that for you. -
This depends on what you are hauling....G13Tomcat Thanks this.

I'm just a tanker-yanker that got thrown into f/b a few winters here in Ohio, and knew NOTHING about it. Not the way to go. I'm lucky to still have a CDL some of the close calls I had, listening to the "shippers~" and accepting their "securement" as law.
@Chewy352 ... i've since purchased that 'Bible' myself, should I ever get thrown in to a situation again. There's more math and physics to it than I realized.
O/P .... if you ARE signing on with a flatbed company, you really SHOULD imbibe in their securement training. If it's just Hot Shot, you better study.... like a sponge. There's a LOT more to it than people realize.Chewy352 Thanks this. -
It just bothers me when someone asks, what should I do in my specific situation? We can't give a good answer. Op is obviously going to do something specific because he's not going to haul much general brokered freight with a 40 ft trailer. We had to lie with our conastoga because we lost about half a foot with the bulkhead and back flap. Try to explain to a broker that shingles don't take up 48 ft and you'll just get silence. All they see is the requirements that someone else put in front of them and they will turn you down and take the next phone call.
We all can give the op a list of everything we carry but that still won't give him the answer he needs and is easily searchable. All the op needs to do is think about how he's going to secure what he'll be hauling, look at the requirements, and look at the ratings on his trailer and he'll have his answer. But that's a lot more work then asking a bunch of strangers on ttr.
Chewy your an a hole. Yes, yes I am.skootertrashr6, passingthru69 and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
I run a 40' hotshot and this is what I carry.
My trailer has 10 sliding winch ratchets that have 4" 30' straps in them.
6) 20' 5/8 chains
6) ratchet chain binders
2) tarps that I never use
Tons on rubber bungee cords
Protectors for straps
4) 4" 40' ratchet straps- I got these in thinking I was going to be hauling shipping containers. That was until I figured out they pay next to nothing.
95% of what I haul is secured with my 4" straps. If your hauling cars, trucks, equipment your list will obviously include more stuff.jrobthetrucker and Lite bug Thank this. -
You're a very wise A hole, if any at all. I learned from YOU guys, too little, too late.... it's out of my league. Then again, as blatant as the O/P's question is / was..... even "I" know better.
Sucks about the 'stoga, then again, their loss. Let the Hot Shots make a mess of things, LoL!passingthru69 and Chewy352 Thank this.
