I'm still pretty new at this, but I'm learning every day and I wanted to impart some wisdom to people newer than me or those who have been driving long enough that their grandkids have more miles than me and maybe they have forgotten.

Perspective: I could have a real job where I work for a living. Instead, I get to drive around all day and honk a really loud horn for kids who pump their arm. I am entirely overpaid for this and I work for a universally revered "bottom feeder", which means I make a fraction of what my peers make. And I'm still overpaid.

The only time I've actually worked since I got my cdl was when I mistakenly accepted a driver load/unload of 45,000lb of tractor trailer tires for Bridgestone. One day in 6 months. I've sat and played video games for longer than 11 hours before. When you love what you're doing, time flies.

Not one thing about this lifestyle makes me want to go back to working in a factory or warehouse. Not my DM, not 4 wheelers, not elogs, not shippers or receivers, not other drivers, not my paycheck, not DOT. Not even driving in California.

Your time in this career and lifestyle will be marked by days, both good and bad, maybe even terrible... but your worst day out here is still better than the best day the guy unloading your trailer has.

    Preach.

I agree in principal - unless you're an OO. If you're an OO and you think your worst day is better than the dock worker, then you haven't paid taxes or blown a motor yet.

At some point [if you stay in the job long enough to learn the skills to stand out from most, and begin to understand your value to a carrier] you will change your tune about your "being overpaid". But for now, perhaps you're right.

Why do O/O keep blowing their motors? Ive been driving 24 years. Driven dozens of trucks from 4 manufacturers while working at 4 different companies. At least 2 trucks over 750,000 miles on them. Never blown a motor. Or a clutch, or a turbo.....you O/O must be hard on equipment or something!

Lots of newer owner ops are bragging how much money they're making ... problem is they haven't dealt with that first major breakdown and then realized perhaps they could have also spent a little more on preventative maintenance items.

My only regret is not making a career of trucking back in '80. Getting back into it a few years ago, and especially after switching to open deck two years ago I am having a blast. I absolutely look forward to getting up every day. Can't wait to get underway.

They open up the engines to wring out all they can. KABOOM. I rescued at least two O/O's whose motors blew out on the road. One left his crankshaft on the pavement with assorted parts and bolts. The other simply lost his oil pan and everything fluid in the engine.

Today's company engines are so casterated you can put 10 million miles on those things and the poor engines will never know what it means to be a engine.
