Hey guys i have a detroit 60 14.0L. Recently i have been addind 1 gallon if oil then 2 then 3 then 4 and im almost at 5 gallons of oil every. Week. I started burning oil at the beginning of january 2017 and i was wondering how far i can push the engine before catastrophic failure. I don't want to be in the situation where i get towed. So can someone please give me a heads up? By the way i have 1.2 million miles on that thing. Thanks
Detroit might need overhaul?

I wouldn't bother buying lottery tickets if I were you, you've used all your good luck up I reckon!
If it isnt leaking out you were probably due 50,000 ago, well done for nursing it this far but its past time to choose your rebuild location.ramblingman and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Yeah the thing is i wanted to push it possibly by the end of this month because thats when my overhaul kit arrives and all.

I'd go to a shop and see why it's going thru so much oil, like yesterday. With 1.2 million, who knows. It could go another 500k, or 5 miles. But when using that much oil, I'd just be willing to bet it's overhaul time, and going from a gallon a week to 5 a week in 6 months, I'd do it sooner than later.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
You're probably the best judge but I'd think hard before i risked it. The extra costs if it died on the road would be stiff, maybe you need a short holiday to take up a week or two?Crude Truckin' Thanks this.

At least your frame won't rust, with that much oil being blown onto it. Might even be able to skip a few lube jobs.

If it were me and I had an overhaul kit on order, I'd stay somewhat local for the rest of the month, within a few hundred miles. That way if it does blow, you don't have to get it repaired thousands of miles away.
Just make sure that when you do the overhaul, you find and fix the issues that's causing all the oil consumption. It might be more than one too, leaky seals and maybe rings as well.Lepton1 and Crude Truckin' Thank this. -
Yeah I'm going to be the one doing the inframe cause i have experience but i will have all the money i need and the bills payed at the end of the of the month and wanted to make sure im good. Thanks y'all for the advice.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Keep pushing it and a rod goes thru the block your going to need more than a overhaul kit.
Did you buy a genuine Detroit kit?Grubby, Tropsnart, dunchues and 1 other person Thank this. -
Might be worth taking the boot off the turbo to make sure it's not going in there before you run the rest of the month?
Grubby, tommymonza, dunchues and 2 others Thank this.
