I don't plan on going out far enough that I would need to shut down but I will definitely cross state lines. The early to mid 20's trucker in me days to cowboy it up but I'm not that person anymore lol. I'm just getting back into this trucking thing and wanna be legit. I can tell it's a headache. Do you guys use rand McNally miles or actual..or both? I can see myself forgetting to write down the mileage on occasion when crossing state lines. Plus I will be doing 90% of my driving at night as my wife works days. We have a child who requires one of us here so that's why I'm going owner op so I can make my own hours. Or at least have more of a say so on it.

    Mr Ed Thanks this.

For occasional trips into another state you can use non-apportioned plates and just buy 72 hour fuel permits. Most sell online.

When I got audited, the auditor said you could use actual mileage, GPS miles, or map miles. The problem you will run into using map or GPS miles is trying to sync them up with your truck odometer. I like it all to match so during a audit there won't any discrepancies and it's less chance for mistakes if you use odometer miles.

I have forgotten myself to write down mileage. You have to go back and try to match everything up.

That sounds easier and less expensive.

Thanks. The stuff I'm hauling (containers) so far hasn't took me down to KY yet. Once I start running my own truck though in a couple weeks I'm sure I'll end up down there lol.

Depends on how much you go out of state. 2-3 times a year get a temporary. Much more than that and it will be easier and cheaper to go with IRP and IFTA.

Also, running out of state tags is a sure way to get pulled around back of the scales.

And IRP. That way if the company I'm pulling for gets slow I will already be ready to run anywhere.
