Hey Guys, hope everyone's Saturday is going well.
Got a question here, for owners of Ram 2500, and 3500 trucks, when I am hooked up to my trailer and start to back up loaded or unloaded for some reason the steering becomes very hard almost as if the power steering is gone. I cannot use one hand at all to steer while in reverse. Has anyone experienced this when they are backing up. I asked my Ram guy at the dealer and he said he hasn't heard of that but it may be something that is in the computer that tells the truck a trailer is plugged into the 7-Pin and possibly limits the steering so as to prevent over-steer. That kinda makes sense, but I don't know if that is realistic. Would appreciate if anyone has had this happen, also if any Ford or Chevy guys have had this happen your comments would be welcome.

    Thanks Guys

Have a great evening. Stay Safe

I'm guessing you have a gooseneck trailer? Have you tried it with a bumper pull trailer? Just curious if it would have the same issues.

Google "Dodge Ram Power Steering Recalls" they are having problems. There is talk of making them buy back trucks due to multiple recalls.

I was going to suggest if you're backing up, you're likely just idling the engine, especially if you've got a manual transmission. It is easy to overwork the power steering at idle if you're cranking on that wheel. An automatic won't be as bad, because you're generally going to be using a little more throttle to push the trailer back.

However, if there have been recalls and other issues with the power steering, there may be something to that, too.

I have a 2015 3500 and haven't had that problem backing with or without a trailer.

Geez.... unplug the 7 way trailer plug and try to back up. Then take the knowledge you gain and get your truck fixed.

Some things never change around here.

I was checking the recalls for my truck and nothing is showing up, like I said maybe it's just something internal IDK but I'm gonna take it in have it looked at anyway it's more of an annoyance then anything else
