If I may, I'd to ask anyone who cares to answer what's right and or wrong with each in this picture?

All I see is standard recruiting language "earn up to..." and "average". In my opinion those are figures before ANY costs are deducted.

Edited to add: chances are at those numbers you'll probably "gross" 85-100k after expenses but before taxes.

    1. Not hard to gross 225,000. I bet that took about 150,000 miles however...
    2. Average 3919 per week. Gross pay. Take out fuel payments etc. Same point as #1.
    3. Almost the same as above. O/O at 250 is probably correct. However, if a company hand can do 85 does that mean the O/O that grossed 250 can pay himself at least 85? That would mean he had total deductions of 165000 out of 250000. Not unreasonable, at approximately the 1/3 1/3 1/3 idea.

You have to remember it is not about who has the biggest gross dollar REVENUE as an owner operator. For example why would you ever want to GROSS 300,000 If your expenses were 240,000? You'd be way farther ahead if you grossed 200,000 and your expenses were 80,000. It's really all about finding what you like to do, being the best at it, and keeping your customer happy. Then just keep doing it til you've saved enough you don't have to turn the key anymore.

Then I just got thinking. To thicken it even more. The man who grossed 200 and expenses 80 in my above example may have worked 100,000 miles per year for example. And paid himself 120,000. The man who grossed 300 but expenses 240 only made 60,000. However, what if the larger gross was let's say 3 super oversize moves and he only worked 25% of the man that ended up with twice as much. See... can twist anything. Gotta figure out what works for you.

Somebody should explain that "earn" should be replaced with "gross". And, it would also be helpful if many of the ad readers had a clue about the costs that "gross" must cover before you can begin to consider net profit, which is where the "wages" can be paid from, if the net is there.

Not to mention a lot of guys start with new[er] trucks [and no real maintenance costs] and then in 2-3 years the major expenses start to come down the pike, and then they realize they apparently miscalculated their profit. Those maintenance escrow accounts are typically way underfunded for the long term. They are designed assuming the contractor will only make it 18 months at the most.

It's sad that so many can be taken in by misleading advertising language.

I would want to keep 30k in escrow just to be safe......You never know when a motor could go belly up on you..
I got a buddy with 3 trucks....2 are down right now and he has no money to fix them...
What a struggle and headache that would be.

One reason I went back to being a company driver back in 2001......Just so much less stress when you find the right company.

You know some new guys that never made more than 12-15k a year will see those ads and jump all over it.
Then they find out how they give their life away pretty much just to make maybe 30k the first few years.

I really think trucking is the lowest paying gig per hour of most any job.
If you consider the hours away from home many drivers make way less than minimum wage.

The only reason I'm still in it is I go straight out and back home empty.....sleep maybe 2 nights in the truck a week at most.....plus get paid during my 10 hour break while out overnight.

I used to see similar figures for company's like the one below, the truck does look roomy, there was a couple here when I rolled in at dark thirty with longer sleepers, one with with tv shining. looked nice!
