I was just curious if anyone has had problems with their trucks after getting forward lane departure/ collision warning systems put in their trucks?

I have a 2009 Freightliner Columbia and 2007 Volvo. Very well maintained. We had the mobileEye installed and just in one week, both have broken down with what seems like "electrical" problems; the Volvo twice And Freightliner once.

With regards to the Volvo, at first we thought it was the alternator so we had that replaced. Last night my driver said that the dashbord was flickering and it was fine around the yard but once he got on the highway and excellerated, the truck just shut off.

Any thoughts? Anyone have similar problems ?

Why? On God's green earth would you voluntarily put that crap in your trucks? HUGE discount from your insurance scammer?

Maybe if you could decribe these 'electrical' problems in greater detail, someone could help.

Well, I had them installed because I am a fed ex contractor and unfortunately we are required by August 2017 to have all of our fleet outfitted with them.

I can definitely talk to my driver and get a more detailed explanation of what happened last night. I had to go pick him up in the middle of the night so I'm still trying to get my wits about me, but figured it couldn't hurt to post something here in the meantime

From what I have seen of the mobile eye (2014 installation), it is the least intrusive installation of all the 'save driver from himself' BS, with just a sensor in the windshield and a cable running to the processor located behind the dash and power to that. Should be fairly easy to fix if it was caused by the installation.

And that's why I went with it :) I wanted the least intrusive to make my drivers happy. My husbands on it now and he does think it was a wire in the engine. I'll keep you updated. I was more curious if anyone had similar problems. I know a lot of contractors are really POed about having to install this...

Many times, systems like these are not installed properly or not connecting to powers, ground and datalinks at the proper locations and cause issues like this. Everyone wants everything done as cheaply and quick as possible and the installation quality isn't there either. Wiring connections are cheap and can get severed. Connector are not properly sealed against water intrusion and end up corroded.

Thanks for the insight heavyD! We used the "certified " mobileeye installer, according to them (omnitracs) we had to use an installer versus installing it ourselves. Which I thought was odd since we installed the ELD ourselves, although I know the installation was much less intense.

So I'm guessing I need to contact these installers and get them out here? At this point I'm wary of them...I certainly didn't go cheapest that's for sure

I would discard that technology. over complicating the wiring etc and easier to simply watch your truck shut off.

I don't want to present a position that I am against that technology, but that is one of the most basic tasks of a professional driver. It would be a unnecessary complication, expense and so forth with good drivers. A example of why we risk paying servitude to the machine rather than making the machine serve us well.

Explore other insurance options that don't require over complicating with installations of technology that is not built into your tractors in the factory. These things never go well. No wonder that alternator cooked. It's well that it did because something else might have cooked.

Wiring those things are incredibly intense. I don't even want to know what goes into a harness between the engine and tractor's dash board anymore. This is not the old days where you had a old style fuse board in front of the passenger seat where you can pull the panel and discover very quickly what is burnt and what is not on the entire tractor. (Trailer is self explanatory on the 14 hole pigtail)

I actually put into practice what I preach, I intentionally drive older vehicles with very little computer technology in them. These modern vehicles with all the bells and whistles is BS to me. Unnecessary. If people are so lazy and to rely on them to drive, then they should not be drivers at all.

I know, now you start a tug of war between the installer defending his work and blaming the issues on the truck itself. You may need a dealer level technician to get involved that is good with wiring and electronics to see if the installer is to blame or not.

i completely understand where you are coming from and I agree on many points, we like our older trucks for so many reasons. We had to get this tech or loose our contract with Fed Ex Ground so that's what started it all. However, like most companies, FxG doesn't really understand the nuances of such a big across the board mandate. I also agree with your position of it being a basic task of a professional driver--it seems like FXG doesn't have faith in us!

And yes, very thankful that it's just the alternator (so far).
