I'm GREEN when it comes to radios. I've only been into them for about a month. But in that month I've been reading around this site and watching hard drives videos. Most of which is over my head but interesting just the same.
My setup is as follows. I have an 01 ram diesel and have a lot of noise coming through my cb from my alternator and my speaker crackles when the horn is honked or wipers are used. It's only heard through the speaker. It's not picked up on transmit. I am running a unmodified cobra 29 lx with a Wilson 5000 mag mount. Power and ground come from battery and I ran an addational ground wire not strap from the radio mounting bracket to the driver seat bolt. What would your approch be to fixing this.

Will I get much improvement if I mount the 5000 permanently?
I also plan on purchasing a 955 from mark but I'm still researching on weather or not to purchase a linear and run that with the 29 for a wile then when I get a 955 from mark send him the linear at the same time. I just need to keep researching things like how much power do I want, what brand to go with? Soooo many questions.
    Thanks in advance.

no need to run gnd wire from radio, thats what power/gnd wire is for..
If you wanna gnd the truck body to chassie, its gonna have to be braded straps not much more than 8" long..
Aly noise well i have no idea orthern than trying to re route coax some..

Dont know enuf about the antenna question but there would be a diff, how much i have no idea...Play it safe and just use the mag till you solve other issues 1st..

I suspect harddrive wouldn't approve of the Simplicity of this but have you tried one of these?

It's a capacitor which filters ac noise out of the alternator and it bolts to ground and the wire connects to the output of the alternator and bleeds noise straight to ground.

    Wow.

This happens a lot and filters don't always fix the problems on a dodge cummins.

    To the op, go here

Alternator AC Noise? - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

    and watch the video,

Then test your alternator as described. Get a good meter to do this, not a cheap one.

Your correct on that Ridgeline. I have another dodge that had an alternator take out the Ecm a few years ago. What's a target number I should be trying to achieve?
Porkchop I tried pep boys, advanced, and salvos auto parts No one had the capacitors but Amazon sure did. Thanks

Actually I posted the wrong forum post, here is the right one.

Alternator AC volts - Page 2 - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

This goes to page two, start at the beginning.

You want that ac ripple as low as possible, 11 or less millivolts ac is where you want.

This seems to be a common problem with these alternators, too much leakage from the diode pack and no filtering. I got tired of trying things out so I put in a leece Neville 200 amp with an external rectifier and regulator on my dodge, and do not have any issues.

Got around to testing my alternator. Ac volts peaked at 3.9 so I'm going to go ahead and replace it before I destroy another ECM. In the meantime I had installed a power filter and it total cleared up all of my radio issues. I also ordered my 955 from mark.

I'm not sure what all the bad mouthing I've read about him on line is all about but so far my experience with him has been great. Seemed to be a very friendly guy who is into his craft. I wasn't treated like a customer at a big box store I can tell you that. I had questions and he was willing and able to answer them. He doesn't seem like a guy who just wants to sell you a radio. He made me feel that he wants his radio to pro form well in my vehicle. He wanted to know what kind of vehicle I was installing it in so he could give me some installation suggestions. That's the kind of service I remember from when I was a kid and I don't see it much these days. I wish I could have spoke with him a little longer but my 7year olds attention span wasn't long enough so I had to cut the call a little short. I'm not trying to start a 59 page Harddrive praising or bashing post I just figured since most people only post about negative experiences I would share a Positive One.
