It's weight based pay per hundred pound. So yes you make more money, but steel hauling has become so cheap the last few years IMOP it's not worth the wear and tear on the equipment, or the headache of dealing with mills and processors. I used to run a lot of steel, then they wanted everything permitted. When they did that the rate dropped like .5 per pound some lanes were more. I told them they could keep it, now we haul mostly open deck building material. Best move I've ever made getting away from covered wagon steel hauling. AK has a dedicated broker you have to deal with used to be PLS now it's Ryder, I never really dealt with them for that reason, we did go in there but it was always for customer pick up.

I have a dedicated run out of a steel mill in indiana. Run smaller coils(65k to 84k on deck) up to carrier up in Indianapolis then over to a Greenfield and grab 2 big master coils. But yea I refuse to step foot in a Ak steel lol.. Especially Middletown Ohio plant, those folks suck!!!

I used to haul coils outta AK in Middletown.

You mean you don't like how everyone around there has such hateful attitude???? Lol...

AK steel is one of the reasons I decided to stop hauling coils, and North American stainless in Ghent, KY turned into a Maverick and CRST terminal....

There was a lady in there at the scale house, she needed choke slammed.

I usually hauled outta there (Middletown) at night, usually the black iron coils. No tarp per customer, but this stupid ##### still tried to make me tarp every time if she saw me. I don't know how anyone could get along in there on day shift.

Big girl with a bad attitude?

She's either needing some trucker love or a dozen donuts. Take one for the team, though I'd advise trying the donut thing first. At least then you could look yourself in the mirror the next morning.
