I run a heavy duty wrecker in the Chattanooga area. In the last six months I've seen a marked increase in towing due to steer tire blow outs and I've worked more wrecks due to steer tire blow outs recently than in the 2.5/3 years prior. One shop manager that I towed a steer tire blow out to yesterday said he has one company with 5 steer tire blow outs in less than 3 months and they are looking into an official inquiry of some sort with the manufacturer. I'm not prepared to say which manufacturer because I don't know which and it's just getting apparent that there might be a trend or something so I haven't paid attention to the manufacturer on my tows.

Any of you noticing any thing like this? Do we have a steer tire issue about to be news?

If there is a particular manufactor with bad tires in steer that go out, we need to know which it is. Otherwise you are not going to get any feedback.

My first thought would be goodyear, Ive had trouble with car tires coming out bad from the factory. I don't buy their tires anymore.

It could also be caused by low tire pressure. Low tire pressure combined with higher temperatures can cause serious problems.

Death Valley at 130 comes to mind with pavement temps approaching 170 plus.

That was one of the few times Ive worried for the darling tires in our FFE rig going across there. 90 in the cab full A/C, reefer yelling in high range that wont quit and thirsty on fuel to boot (Icecream.. -20 don't mean it will be -20 in death valley)

Oh those poor tires... you learned not to stop. Patches would stick and ergo square wheels leaving patches. Some drivers tried to claim a handle for me Patches... over the radio. Oh those poor tires.

Wife was put out. I worried and clucked over those stupid tires more than I cared about her migraine that day. Took months before she stop extracting a pound of flesh as it were.

I don't know the manufacturer or if all the ones I've dealt with are the same manufacturer. When I show up to tow, the tire is destroyed. It's just a lot more than usual.

We had a problem with Bridgestone R283A steer tires in the last couple years. More than we'd seen in the last 20 years. Thankfully those tires have mostly worn out or been replaced and we're back to normal.

I saw a truck with a blown steer tire last year. It was a Salean or something simular. They spent thousands of dollars to repair the damage but should have junked it. The frame was bent. Asked about the damage on the left side and was told it blew out that tire last month. Knocked out the head light assembly, beat up some other stuff but did not go through the ditch. They did specify a USA built tire for replacement.
Saw some GoodYear steer tire problems in 87. In both casses inflation curbing and such is unknown. If you folks are seeing that stuff why not post it on up? Eveyone knows problems caused by road hazards and low inflation can show up.
Some smart person could start a post like "Tires Good and Bad" for new tires. If a pattern for defective tires shows up it is a combined result just not one person made at his one time deal. Same for good results. Just a thought.

When I was out there at Furnace Creek I am glad it was during a cold front and only saw 121 F , Well below the record 138 F. That old steam tractor that replaced the 20 mule team is pretty cool to check out. Taking time out at Scottys Castle was great. It is kind of like a minature Vanderbilt. Check it out if you can but E logs probably won't let you.
At that time I remember talking to and or thanking the A/C to keep working. I should have been thanking about tires also or a higher power that would cover everything.

I've noticed the exact same thing recently.
    LOTS of blown steer tires!!

I wonder how many are the Chinese variety that has flooded the market, targeting the bottom dollar buyers??
