So I was speaking to multiple employees of USX at a truck stop. Also a few online and my school instructor. All of them contradicted what my USX recruiter told me. Recruiter said they want to hire me fresh out of school on the dollar general dedicated account in the south east. Which is fine. Home for a 34 on weekends. Everyone said he was lying and USX is known to BS people.....I would get to orientation, they pull a bait and switch and toss me OTR. Which I do not want or desire.
For those that know for sure, is this true? Not sure why a recruiter would BS someone that hardcore but it happens I assume?
Got an offer from USX and G&P Trucking and gotta pick one. Decisions decisions. Just don't wanna be lied to (yes I know it happens).

Going on to a Dollar account fresh outta school isn't highly advised for newbies; could definitely be a career killer. The backing and maneuvering situations are less than desirable, and often can be a career killer for rookies.
I'm not familiar with G & P trucking; but I'd definitely go that route. Anything to NOT do Dollar stores, being new.
Do a search on here .... you'll see.Gordo 13, passingthru69, Mike2633 and 3 others Thank this. -
That's what I was thinking. A lot of the ones here in my town are tiny tiny tiny places to get into. I couldn't imagine a 53'.
He also said $1200/wk average. BS? -
Are you implying the recruiter might be stretching the truth? They wouldn't do that, would they?

Lol. Recruiters lie? Haha. say it isn't so

The USX guy that pulls one of our local Dollar stores here, has been on the account for 9 years. Yeah, HE makes that... and more. He's around 30, in good shape, and was a trainer for USX / OTR before he took the account. Starting out, however... that's probably not even a fair "potential." Smokescreens, baby. It's probably the average for an EXPERIENCED guy on the DS accounts, but starting out? Heh. The time it takes you to back; the unloading, I know they have stop pay / drop pay and all that, but not sure of the details..... I'd imagine you'd be looking at 1/2 that on a GOOD day.
I drove OTR for them back in 03 or something; money wasn't great, but nothing as you speak of. Then again, it was 14 years ago.
The "tiny places" thing is what's probably the most ill advised info you've gotten, that it's good for a rookie. I've heard SO many situations where drivers literally ended their careers, in the back of a Dollar Store.
What's this G & P company / thing you speak about... may be a better idea, if you don't want to go OTR.
Personally, even for 1200 TAKE HOME I wouldn't do the Dollar Stores. Yeah, I could probably maneuver in and out, after almost 20 years of "practice" .... but the unloading, no thanks.
There are SO many better options, man. Keep looking.. keep your eyes on the prize. A CDL with a decent career, that won't get trashed within a month!J-Dub Thanks this. -
ps: Is there an ODFL (Old Dominion) near you? It's been mentioned on here, frequently lately, that they hire fresh out of school anymore. You'd have to have your endorsements, and pull doubles (pups) and learn the pintle and all that, but... the money is pretty darn good, so I hear. Home daily, as well. Then, there's foodservice which is similar to LTL, like @Mike2633 does. If you don't mind moving product; that might be a company to look at.
Look at other / ANY LTL / linehaul jobs, for that matter. Don't do the Dollar stores! @Bob Dobalina ... any advice?? -
I agree completely with G13Tomcat. I would not want DG dedicated. Rookies trying to park a trailer in them least truck friendly place possible is a recipe for disaster. G&P Trucking is a good company. one of their drivers posts lots of videos on YouTube. Search for Red Viking Trucker
-
Exactly. That's why I was wondering if it was a bait and switch. A rookie like myself would take forever to squeeze in there and get frustrated then have to unload. It's good money, I don't mind the work but I think too much too soon.
Yes G&P Trucking seems great so far. I got a ore hire and red Viking trucker is the reason I applied. He has a lot of good to say about them and I trust his expertise. Just can't get a hold of the recruiter. Left him 6 messages all week. Frustrating.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
In General, don't do the Dollar....
passingthru69, Mike2633, tscottme and 2 others Thank this.
