you lecture me as if i am a company driver, i was back then but not now, you don't have all the facts about my business to dress me down and you cannot piss on my leg and tell me it's raining, you don't know how i run and if you did you would know that the word "helpless" is simply not in my vocabulary
but i would be helpless if i had to depend on office staff to do my job, notwithstanding the customer leads
i do not complain about lack of respect or being mistreated because respect is earned and as my original post explained that particular company failed to earn mine and i did not allow him to mistreat me, if you want me to "try again" as in engage here with you please do show me basic respect and read my post and respond to my words rather than the voices in your head
i never implied it’s drivers who run the entire show so please do not polarize my point of view
of course i don't build the customer list because that is not how this industry works, logistics is a supply chain and my link in that chain is to deliver freight and make the customer happy, my truck runs on professional relationships, good reputation and high service standards but even brokers have admitted to me that getting customers is not the hard part of this job, not saying they don't earn their money but i also wouldn't say jawing on a telephone or schmoozing clients is comparable to the work drivers perform
where i come from "work" means actually using your legs and your arms with demanding effort and if that's happening in an office they are not doing their job right
arrive at the pick up, customer requires me to put my mt exactly where my loaded trailer is parked so i get to drop and hook six times before i can shove off (drop mt in lot, pu loaded at dock, drop loaded in lot, pu mt from lot, drop mt at dock, pu loaded from lot), support staff doesn't even understand what "drop and hook" means let alone how to do it safely and quickly nor how to do it six times without getting in anyone's way, this is my idea of "work"
your outrageous statement "their job is more difficult than yours" is ridiculous because i have done their job so i know this is total hogwash, maybe you don't but as driver i do much more than "holding a steering wheel" or "just drive a truck" as you say, if you are a driver and have years of experience i don't understand why you would make this statement except maybe it actually is more difficult to you but that's no reason to preach to me
throwing iron late in my drive shift, bone tired and hungry, it is dark-thirty on a mountain road in a wet sticky snow storm, i'm trying to keep track of my tools and maintain my footing in the snow while untangling frozen chains and not get run over by 4-wheelers frantically speeding close by and not get completely water soaked and so cold i can't pick anything up, dealing with surly LEOs lording over me and selfish dangerous drivers curling their rigs around me, helping 4-wheelers and other drivers install their chains with a constant eye on my clock so i stay legal and can make my commitments
meanwhile support staff is fat and happy in a warm dry office slurping their hot cocoa gazing at computer messages and pictures on weatherchannel.com and answering telephones and typing email until quitting time, watching the clock so they know when they can go home
arrive at a shipper and my company has messed up the appointment and my pick up is actually tomorrow, so that means i just burned up fuel, time and trip planned for no reason, my hos getting wasted, lost opportunities for other more profitable loads, now need to hustle and find a safe and legal place to wait it out, all this costs me real money and creates more work for me, not complaining just comparing and contrasting
because what happens when office staff fails in their job? nothing--except the driver is required to pick up the slack, that's ok because that’s good teamwork but when the office makes a mistake there are much different consequences and they always seem to keep their job mistake after mistake after mistake
but a driver can make a single mistake that can end their career in an instant, or cost that driver significant time and money or something injurious, deadly, destructive or tragic, it means drivers face more difficulty
the company drivers are rarely spared the luxury of making more than a couple mistakes before they are fired in the name of safety (insurance company), this gets back to my original post where a dispatcher was allowed to compromise a driver’s safety and at the same time safety is routinely used as reason to terminate drivers, office workers enjoy more worker protection from such hypocrisy
office staff gets their full paycheck regardless of whether they are productive or not, it is the exact opposite for drivers
at a truck stop i bump into a bully who is having a bad day, is irrational and in a bad mood, for whatever reason he gets set off by me and he threatens to hurt me and when I don’t back down he finds me later and tells me what my truck looks like and that he did something nefarious to my equipment, and so now i need to find the thing—if there actually is a thing--this guy did to sabotage my truck and i must do it before i can shove off, nothing can compare to this kind of challenge in an office

LOL, just because you have been doing something for most of your life doesn't mean you are any good at it
These two statements of yours sound like a desperate declaration of your superiority; why bother? please consider why you need to pound away about how great you are to a total stranger
IMHO you have no idea who I am so your arrogance is unwarranted and unremarkable, your short-sighted statements about drivers, your unfounded assumptions about me and your irrelevant, nonsensical finger-wagging all make you sound like a super trucker who acts on his ego and emotions, over-confident and full of himself, all dangerous traits in a truck, check yourself, driverLast edited: May 30, 2017

You're wasting your breath. I quit reading about 2 sentences in when I realized you missed the part where I said:
My point is that ALL of those jobs have to be done, and if you own your truck you either do them yourself or you pay somebody else to do them for you. Either way, the driving part is not possible without all of the other parts and pieces coming together. Generally speaking, there are more company drivers on here than there are O/O's, and among the O/O's there are several different varieties...so yes, generally speaking when I write a post addressing a general topic, I do so from a standpoint that will resonate with the most people reading it, unless my post is directed specifically at an individual.
Now this IS directed specifically at you. You would $#!+ your britches if you even tried taking a truck through half of the places I have...but hey, keep practicing and maybe someday you too can do more than cruise down the interstate thinking you've got skills.spyder7723 and Ezrider_48501 Thank this. -
