Pull the valve cover off and have a look at the cam and rollers. If it looks good, should be good. Don't rely on just an oil sample using clean fresh oil. It's not going to show anything. Check for white smoke coming out of the stack.
Bean Jr., bzinger and HalpinUout Thank this. -
RUN..RUN..RUN..from the bypass system. My truck HAD one and the engine went after 700K miles. 21K rebuild later there is no bypass system any longer installed on my truck. Previous owner sent in oil samples every 15k and was meticulous about maintenance. If oil bypass systems were supposed to be installed on trucks, the engine manufacturers would recommend them. Oil producers could care less if you buy more motor oil from them,,,,they are KA--Jillionaries whether or not you purchased one less or more oil change.

So what was the failure and how did the by - pass filter coz it? 700k isn't uncommon for some motors to fail

Engine wasn't running right so it was taken to Cummins (ISX) and they evaluated it. Told them the oil was changed every 100K miles as per the bypass filter instructions. Cummin's official opinion was that oil cannot go that long between changes, regardless what the samples said. All the samples came back great so the previous owner ran it until it wouldn't run correct. Once the bypass system was removed and the oil was changed every 15K miles, there have been no further issues. 435K on an inframed ISX and the truck is getting great fuel mileage and runs awesome.
It cost $20,884 to inframe the engine. That's 54 oil changes at around 385.00 per oil change. That equates to 4.5 years of oil changes. So as my not-so-lucky friend found out, change the oil when the manufacturer recommends or risk an engine failure.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
What do you mean by ran it until it didn't run right?
Cummins official is not likely an engineer and sole purpose is to lay blame on anything other then their products. If it was their product that failed yours would have been the first that ever happened to.
As for the by pass filter all its doing is fine filtering a small amount of the oil so if the samples are good and the filters are change when the are supposed to be I dont see how the coz a failure. But you still haven't said what failedLast edited: Jun 5, 2017

There is so much misleading statements here I don't know where to start.
A bypass filter will keep your oil cleaner, longer. There is no question about that.thaistick Thanks this.
