Has anyone sucessfully invoked the APU weight exemption at a scale and if so, how was that recieved by said scale monkey?
I haven't, but came close at Trinidad, CO their scale is messed up bad, and their reading was over the exemption amount.
Thanks

That scale is always bad! I swear someone messes with their scales when they are closed. Ive had alot of weird readings there
fargonaz Thanks this. -
I've been let go twice by the exemption. I try not to be that heavy, but once with orange juice and once with stone about 6 years later. I think their scales were wrong in both cases, but neither one seemed to care when i came in with all required paperwork. Just an "ok, have a nice day."
fargonaz Thanks this. -
I think they use it as an excuse just to make you park.
I took a load of cars from albq to denver. I was under gross. Hit trinidad and they told me i was 1000 over. Ran in to a surprise inspection and they said nothing about weight. Made delivery and i was lighter then when i left.
4 scales and trinidad was the only one that hassled me about weight.fargonaz Thanks this. -
If you use the exemption in Florida you have to have a apu weight certificate from the mfg.
Most mfg. have them online, print it and put it in your permit book.KB3MMX, Holland Duck and fargonaz Thank this. -
1000 over for Colorado or new mexico? Colorado will give you 36000 as per the front of atlas..both for interstate and Colorado roads
I got hauled in at Mack? Co. I 70 entering from Utah. Prepass said tandem weight. (I could see the separate screen prepass system as it was working) Go on static scale.. 11660. 34300. 34000. I just put some fuel in Utah. Officer says I am overweight for Utah... I say I'm not trying to be a smart ### but isn't it 36000 in Colorado? He says yes and says nothing more about it. Barely under gross but for whatever reason that day if you were over 34000 you were getting the red light..KB3MMX, Dave_in_AZ and fargonaz Thank this. -
You're talking axle weight. I"m talking gross weight. You can haul up to 86 but have to be on the secondaries. You're not allowed over 80 on the mains.KB3MMX, Dave_in_AZ and fargonaz Thank this.

Yes, I was axle legal and over gross for the interstate, perfectly fine for secondaries.KB3MMX and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Don't try to invoke the apu rule for Kentucky, they don't have the exemption
KB3MMX, Dave_in_AZ and fargonaz Thank this. -
Around here, us "scale monkeys" ALWAYS give you 550# allowance for a working APU. You don't need to "invoke" anything, but you might be asked to start it up to show it works.
