Here is what happens when you overload a van trailer.
Local scrap yard put a estimated 60,000 lb into a 53' van. Trailer broke right in the middle. In the pic you see, we had raised the trailer in the middle and ran chains from the tandems to the landing gear to get it up off the ground enough so we could move it empty out of the way. Before this pic, the middle was sitting on the ground.
We used a forklift to lift the middle up where it was semi level so they could drag all the matierial out the back.

That's one interesting fork lift you got there. How much can it lift with the rear extended vs tight?strollinruss and PeteyFixAll Thank this.

Total capacity is 60k with the rear retracted and 80k extended. In the pic, it's only good for around 40k extended. We can add 5 more counterweight slabs but didn't need that much just to pick the center of the trailer up.passingthru69, not4hire, Bean Jr. and 3 others Thank this.

Lucky it happened in a yard. Wonder how many times it ran down the road just a ticking time bomb. Scary part about that, not sure if true or not but have heard on multiple occasions guys loading it to 100,000 or more on a standard 5 axle reefer setup... Florida potatoes seemed to be a common commodity..
misterG, PeteyFixAll and Ruthless Thank this. -
I've heard that about Maine potatoes as well.PeteyFixAll Thanks this.

That does not surprise me.
Van floors cannot bridge more than say 10 2000 pound pallets together. You never try to belly load van trailers.
A Ravens flatbed 48 foot with the massive frame rails are rated for 55,000 pounds on the center 20 feet of deck. Anything more than that. Snap.
I get worried when shippers stack 48 pallets on top of everything in the 48 foot reefer etc. It's so easy to snap in the middle. -
Trailer was junk .. in Canada we have 1000's of triaxle 53 footers loading a legal load of 60,000 plus every day
-
Those typically tend to be rated for 65k gross.

If you load a bulldozer on top of a Prius and it it gets crushed, does that make it junk? No as the car was not made to have a bulldozer on the roof. This trailer was not made for a 60k belly load of scrap.LoudOne, misterG, jbatmick and 1 other person Thank this.

65K gross Combination vehicle weight or.. gross trailer weight with three axles?
Im sorry to be a tar baby, but mind is slow today with numbers.
