As a student I keep hearing commentary about waiting to unload or be loaded. Often times up to four hours. My question is, what does a trucker do during that time, does he have to sit in the seat, awake, reading a book?

Hope this is not a dumb question but have yet to see comments what that time is being used for. I have a specific subquestion: can you catch some sleep while waiting?

Thanking you in advance for reading this question.
    Sincerely,
    El Paso Bob

I lay in the sleeper berth and take a nap.

Nap sitting up in the driver seat so you don't lose your place in line.

Clean the truck, look it over, paperwork, eat, nap, read, go for a walk, color the book.

Not often is it more than an hour for me though.

Most people I see are gabbing on the phone. Perfect place and time to do that.

Listen to podcasts, cook food, watch movies/tv, stick pins in my dispatcher voodoo doll, sleep. anything you can bring into truck or think of.

I take a nap, catch up on ttr threads, chat with the wife or my kids, play a video game, screw around on Facebook. The world is yours. However it also depends on your brand of trucking. Flatbedders USUALLY don't sit much more than an hour. Unless your going to one of those infamous places known for stupid scheduling of coil unloads.

Sometimes I stayed in the seat playing on my phone, sometimes I fired up the apu and xbox.... you can get creative. So long as your aware enough to watch for the green light you can do pretty much anything
