I was in a freightliner for a couple months where that lever controlled the Jake brakes. Got back in a kw and came very close to yanking the trailer brakes while coming down a hill the first day or two... I don't know what freightliner was thinking setting it up like that.

Bad design for sure! Did the OP say he was in a Pete?
Either way he needs to get familiar with the truck before taking off down any road....let alone mountains!
Holy crap man! Just thinking about all the drivers on the road these CDL mills crank out that have no freakin clue!....No wonder E-logs and tracking is the next step for everyone!

Only thing I can think of that he was using would be the trolley valve since he's unsure of what it was. I don't drive Petes too often but our have two switches, one for power and the other for the three stages. They also have an engine symbol on the switch. Either way, use a gear lower on the descent, let the gears slow you down, and don't ride the brakes. You heat a set of shoes up enough and your looking at a potential fire, seen it happen and it will burn up a trailer quick fast and in a hurry.

My guess is that he didn't release the tractor brakes. Or this is a joke thread.

Maybe last truck had a Cat with a Brakesaver? On my old KW the trolley and retarder levers look the same.

Went for a test drive with the "truck boss" at a dirt outfit. Slip in his chicken truck and sat there for a moment checking out the controls. Lets go! Hold your horses driver. When I completed my inspection I eased into gear and said where do you want to go? Lets see if you can get it out of the yard....Wrong answer. Idle out to the big road and grab a hand full of gears. So whats your tridem trailer axle bridge? Dumb look on his face. Finished test drive and got out walked to my car. Hey, you'll be back tomorrow. Sure. "Truck boss my as."
