Im buying my first truck.
I will be hauling scrap trailers within a 100 mile radius. No mountains.
I've narrowed potential trucks to:
2005 Mack 900,000 miles
Or
2012 Volvo 800,000 miles.
Both are $15,000 trucks.
Mack is pre-def, looks cosmetically beat up, 350 HP, CXN613, sold by a Mack dealership with a good oil analysis, sounds great, drives great, shop goes over every truck to make sure they are decent.
Volvo is clean, from a grocery store fleet, def, runs and drives good, dealer only sells volvos but said when the trucks come in they aren't really looked at by the shop, 450 HP.
Both have good tires and brakes.
Is it worth $350 to have a dyno done and how much should I pay to have a mechanic look it over?
Before buying checklist? First Truck.

Yes its worth it!! Spend the $350 you wont regret it. Pay a good mechanic a reasonable amount......couldn't really tell you an amount.
Driver0000 Thanks this. -
Luckily there's a Clark Power Systems near my house. $300 dyno and maybe $50 more for a couple other diagnostics.
He told me about 10 times that if the truck breaks while on the dyno, it's not on them, lol. -
Sounds like you would be buying it. If it blows up on the Dyno and there thinking it may not handle the run.
-
The salesman said I can have it dyno'd. If it blows up on the dyno , the sales dept will be on the hook.
-
If you take the truck to joe's dyno down the street to test it and it explodes on the dyno, it is the sale dweeb's problem, not yours. Don't forget the blowby.
Do not forget the ECM dump, don't get a summary, get full dump, which will be more - a lot more - than the times and mileage. It will include all settings and all trouble codes that are reoccurring.
ALSO go to the dealer and get a history of the truck, give them the vin and tell them to see what was the order and the work done at the dealer. Lately a lot of dealers are pulling this crap about privacy but I talked to Daimler last month on this issue and they said they have not told the dealers not to give the data out.Driver0000 Thanks this. -
I'm probably going to take the 2012 Volvo to have it dyno'd next Wednesday/ Thursday.
Something inside me is telling me to go with the pre-emissions Mack but I want to give the Volvo a chance.
They're both $15,000 trucks. I hope to get six months put of the truck before having to put money into it. Lol. -
Oil test going to be accurate if a dealer changes the fluids before putting on sales lot?
How much is DYNO test, and if you don't have a mechanic, what's the best place to go to to have one look it over?
Also excuse the green, but why is DYNO test?Driver0000 Thanks this. -
Dyno as others have recommended and if that's all good a motor vehicle inspection by 3rd party so you know exactly what truck requires to be roadworthy
Driver0000 Thanks this. -
Dyno is $350. It tests the rear end, transmission, and engine. Any weakness should show.T-BoneX Thanks this.
