Hey folks, Right now im doing Power only. Preloaded van pick up then doing live unloads. If I own my own wagon(van) is there that much of a difference in the rate? So is it worth it to buy the van and hang out for the load out and the live unload?
Thanks in advance.

Options are always good. The rates are what you make them. My power only runs are always really good paying round trip rates all the way back home empty or I reject them. If I get something to load up coming back that's bonus money. But I'm not captive to just power only. When you're captive to something it's different and you can't be so selective. Get every kind of trailer you can and go with whatever happens to pay the best.

Thanks Rollin coal, You just answered a bigger question that I have n my head
-
Are you suggesting buying multiple trailers? What happens if you have your Van out in Washington and there's a really good flatbed load going from Washington to Tennessee, are you going to deadhead van back to droplot to switch out to flat then dead head back to Washington to pick it up?
What's the point in having other trailer payments? Just out of curiousity
Or is it more you're suggesting looking for the best rates out the gate from your home and running that trailer type until you make it back then checking to see again?
Why not find the highest average between all trailers for your area of interest and run that type? -
Differing busy seasons for one

I was under the impression it's break balls busy for all types outside of winter. I'm still green and learning

I don't know what your operation will be like. Most guys I know run like I do. That is we go out from home and right back to it. Luckily there's good outbound and inbound freight here. I'm not suggesting anyone go out and get a bunch of payments on any equipment. Pick up what you can as you can afford it. My equipment is all paid for and always has been.
I always roll out on the best pay for either reefer, dry van or power only. Sometimes I load back home. Sometimes I deadhead back. Sometimes I triangle back. Sometimes I'm gone a day, sometimes 5 days, or 6 rarely. I always go home for the weekend. And deadheading 500, 600 or further to get back is always on the table. Do it many times a year mostly from Florida. Something I see from one truck guys I know on here that are successful they usually have more than one trailer type.Last edited: Jul 5, 2017

Thats what im doing now, Roll out P/U the load, run it, sit wait for the unload time,( I always get there early i take no chances) live unload which can take H O U R S come back drop the empty and DH home. my DH is about 100 mi. The Broker is trying to discourage me from buying a 53 I understand why but the way I see it the money on the haul is not enough. I feel like i should be getting a better rate for the time i spend sitting. And for my area theres not alot of PO loads but there are a lot of Vans Flat Reefers etc. AND im closer to home and not such a long DH. IDK im thinking that i see a 53 in my near future.
T-BoneX Thanks this.
