well, im at orientation right now and i gotta say the first day was fairly easy. The worst part was going through the DOT physical again. They tell you right up front that they lose people due to medical reasons the first day. And we did 3 to be exact. 2 had hurneas (or how ever you spell it) and 1 and high blood pressure. They are upfront about everything they exspect from you, so really the only thing you have to do is pay attention and do everything to the best of your knowledge. When we got to the hotel they handed us a packet to read, and to be turned in the next morning. the first day was doing paper work and 3 tests (general knowledge, math, and safety.) Thats it for now later...

Hey Rebel...
What type of math are they expecting?
Best of luck in orientation.

They want you to prove that E = M C sqared, and show your work longhand.
Just kidding, mostly simple addition and subtraction, with a little multiplication and division, all with the aid of a calculator. Bring your own calculator, and pack it in your carry on luggage in case your luggage takes a wrong turn at Newark and ends up a day late. Having your calculator show up after you finish taking the test is a real bummer, take it from someone who knows. -
Woo-hoo.... I think I could handle that....now.....if it was along the lines of partical theory or quantum mechanics I would be in trouble.
Thanks for the heads-up...much appreciated.

well the 2nd day was pretty cool, we went through defensive driving and seen a bunch of videos and clips of past TMC "accidents". Also went through the simulator (just a really expensive video game) but still they take it seriously and base their first impression as a driver on you in that room. And then went out to the range and straight backing for about 2 hours. They say the 2nd through 5th day is going to be late days. We didn't get out until 8 pm. Thats all i got. later

third day,
A bunch of tests!! Had three tests over defensive driving, 1 test over a video and Logging. We also did all of the benefits, tuition reinbursment and sign all of the company policy forms. I just wanted to add if you are planning on coming to TMC make sure you do your best on every test they administer. They take those scores and compare them to the rest of the class. We had 2 guys sent home because of the simulater and test scores so just pay attention to everything. Good luck.

I have been following some of your blogs about orientation and hoped you could answer some questions for me. I was accepted to TMC in March but basically chickened out. I am thinking about trying to start in January but the stories I keep hearing about them sending people home, scares me. I am definately a hard worker and not a joke. I have been employed with the same comapny for the past 15 years. I am mature and very interested in a trucking career. Can you shed some light on what type of people are really there and what type of people get let go?!?! I graduated truck driving school in March, first in my class. I do not think I would have a problem but one never knows. Thanks in advance for any help!! Scott -
Scott,
It sounds like you are a pretty dedicated guy, and hopefully it will be the same for being a trucker. The people that are going home are the people that can't pass a DOT physical, lie about their driving/criminal record and the ones that don't have good time management. You have to be punctual when it comes to TMC. That what they pride themselves on. "Being on time everytime". As far as the orientation, don't sweat it, as long as you can sit through videos, do some simple tests that you have already done in your driving school, and take some fairly good notes you WILL do fine. The only thing that most of the people are having problems with is the 13 speed. Again their not looking for a professional, their looking for people that are improving as they progress through the orientation. My advice is to go for it. TMC is the company I will be with for the "long haul". If there is anything else....just ask

Thurs-Fri
Thursday was spent doing our benefits package and tuition reinbursment. Aflac came in, some banks came in the get us to convert to their bank, and we took another test. Also done simulators and straight backing on the range until 8pm.
Today-We started load securement!!!! Watched some videos about what happens when we don't secure 40k pound steel coils (p.s crushes cars). If you've ever seen the video on TMC's website with the guys throwing the straps over the big contaiiner, that exactly what we did today. No simulators or test. But they did give a test to take home. Left at 4pm.
rebelFratsit Thanks this.
