Cheap dash cam are just that, cheap.
I'd recommend one that has GPS in it so that it show speed at the time of the incident. (though that can backfire as it made me look like an ### when I showed myself speeding through a construction zone).

As another PS to this, my son does have a Rand Mcnally device that was expensive, he purchased it new when he was driving for a different company regionally just out of trucking school. I think I remember him saying that can be used as a dash cam somehow, but he has been having problems with battery life - he's been dimming the screen display to help it last to the end of his run. I'm not sure if it would be practical to set up the dash cam feature in that.

Thank you very much for the recommendation and thread link.

My drive cam footage doesn't show blindspot mirrors. Need a new camera. All it shows is traffic move forward in front of me, me not moving at all to let space build up, the clicking of my turn signal for 5 minutes, a crunching noise, me saying "what the #### was that?!" And the unclicking of my seatbelt and setting of my brakes, followed by "you stupid ### mother####er" and me yelling at him to pull the #### off to the side of the road. Then there's about 3 minutes of honking while I moved over to the shoulder and parked behind him so traffic wouldn't take them out while we handled paperwork. There's a 911 call and me explaining it in detail and you can half ### hear him asking me if I saw him at all, followed by me saying "did you not see ME st all?!" And it cut to the next clip.
Sent it all to claims and safety, showed the DOT, showed the driver review "board" or whatever and they all said it was my fault because DOT said it was basically.Rusty Trawler, Lepton1 and tinytim Thank this. -
Seems to confirm his version of events. I wouldn't be worried if I were him.Evie3 Thanks this.

Just a final comment to finish off this thread. My son dropped off the police report yesterday and when he got back to his terminal this morning the manager gave him a paper that indicates it is being considered non preventable. As others mentioned, it's going into his folder as such and will have no affect on his status in the company. Since no vehicles had to be towed and nobody required medical attention, his MVR is still clean.
I cannot thank all of you enough for your comments. Because I'm not a trucking insider myself, the comments and information from people who know how the business works helped me maintain a positive perspective while waiting to see how the dust would settle from this incident. Please know that you made a difference.RedRover, TaterWagon#62, street beater and 2 others Thank this. -
I ordered my dashcam on a Saturday. The following Tuesday (Before the cam arrived) a young girl hit me head on. Luckily, all the evidence at the scene proved that I was at the extreme right of my lane when I was hit and that I had gotten my truck stopped before she hit me.
I always run my dashcam and I take it out every night. All you have to do is clean the windshield and suction cup in the morning when you attach it.
Make sure you can reach it from the driver's seat to do a capture for near misses and other "interesting" happenings.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
NO GPS!
Why? Because GPS can lag. It can get confused. Do you really want to try to explain that you weren't doing 65 mph in a 45 zone, it was just that your GPS glitched and didn't update in real time?
But please trust my dashcam footage! That I just put into question...
No data is much, much better than BAD data.
NO GPS!tinytim Thanks this. -
I've had a dash cam with GPS for 4 years and it never has done anything like what you described. If GPS was commonly that unreliable all of our GPS navigation units would be pretty much useless.
Sounds like you just had a cheep or defective unit.Lepton1 Thanks this.
