It costs me between $3000 and $3300 to operate on a week I drive 3000 miles. That's before I pay myself. And that's also including time off. So those weeks are free if I don't take more time off than I budgeted for.

True on my end too. Plus except for fuel cost, off time due to a break downs the bills still need paid.BoyWander Thanks this.

My fixed costs (no fuel or maintenance) will average right around $1500/week. I have had some weeks like this past one where I cleared $2,700 after everything. The week before, $145.00
There are a bunch of variables, some you can control. -
I'm figuring my expenses this year, for everything including the $10,000 down payment on the truck, maintenance fund, and fuel, will be right around $125,000-$130,000 based on 125,000 miles. Plus my boss gets his %. Total cost will end up like $155,000 and whatever I gross above that will be mine before taxes.
Right now I'm at like $140,000 gross. So I think at this point in the year, anything I gross for the year will be all profit minus $15,000 or so. -
There is money in trucking but it has to be treated like a business. You went get rich doing it for sure. Actually, there are some company drivers that make more money than me but that's not the reason I'm an o/o. Being an o/o is a better quality of life for me.
Anyway, my daily expenses that happen regardless if the truck works or not is $96 a day. When I work I must add in fuel. -
I jumped in and bought a truck last month and leased on with a local carrier. They take care of insurance and I run under their authority.
Start up costs were about $8,000. That's tags, taxes, down payment dyno, mechanic checking out the truck, and incidentals.
Two weeks in and I just put a new radiator in the truck for $1300 plus a few hundred in coolant, gas to go pick up the radiator 150 miles away, and misc., stuff.
Next month, I'll pay about $800 for PM and possibly another $1000 +- for brakes.
I've been grossing $2000/week. $1400/ month truck payment for 12 months.
So far, I've not been able to cut myself a check. I'm guessing that I'll be able draw $750/week for myself. The rest will have to stay in the business account for maintenance, repairs, taxes, and other expenses.
After a year, I might be able to draw more but only time will tell.
No one knows the expenses until after you get the bill for the break downs. -
Sorry to say this but you should be making money right out of the gate once it is on the road, not wait for money.
By the way, $800 for PM?
What do you do, buy gold plated oil filters?
AND this sentence tells me a lot of people who believe it don't understand how this all works - "No one knows the expenses until after you get the bill for the break downs."
I get the reasoning behind this but this is why you have a large fund to cover repairs and be proactive in PM, not wait till something breaks, then scramble around to get it fixed then find out that instead of costing $2300, it is $4500 - your repair fund needs to cover that without worry.cjb logistics and rank Thank this.
