I use to tell the coil loader to load me suicide style instead of shotgun. I would use 6 chains and 2 straps. I never had a issue, but at one time it seemed coils would just fly off of trailers in birmingham. And they came up with the Alabama coil Carrier card. But Alabama was the only state to come up with it.
There was an invention a guy had on display at the GATS in Dallas some years back. It was a far better way to secure suicide loaded coils.

Sure it can be loaded that way. When the skid is designed properly all the weight is held up on wood beams laying directly on the deck. It's no worse than a coil resting in a coil rack.
Of course I prefer coils loaded suicide style, they are easier to properly secure in my opinion.FerrissWheel and Airborne Thank this. -
With an appropriate amount of securement your tires will break traction with the road before your load comes loose from the trailer.FerrissWheel, Airborne, Dye Guardian and 6 others Thank this.

The guy apparently miraculously lived. His arm was pinned but he's still above the dirt.

Really? Because there was a guy trying to commit suicide by running his car across the interstate i70 in Springfield Ohio couple years back, he ran head on into atruck hauling a suicide coil. Word i had heard was the driver had well over what was needed for securement but the coils still come off the trailer.
Airborne Thanks this. -
That was local drivers who threw two chain an split. Then they would take the curves too fast in town. Then flop! Since then the Feds deemed it impeding interstate commerce for AL. To do that.FerrissWheel, Airborne, spyder7723 and 1 other person Thank this.

I have a side kit so really dont like securing suicide. I use j hooks, and they automatically slide closest to the securement. I load shotgun and use 4 chains, 2 crossing (can't do that suicide) and 3 tie downs over the coil. That way the j hooks stay where I want them.
Airborne Thanks this. -
Do you have J hooks?
-
Yes. They slide when I put them further from the coil. The fewer that are right on top of each makes me feel safer.
-
Can you put unused ones between the ones you're using to keep them from sliding if you see what I'm saying.FerrissWheel, Ruthless, passingthru69 and 5 others Thank this.
