True probably dont want to risk a heavy fine, still dont get how fcc concerns themselves with radios exceeding 4 watts but allow the sale of export radios knowing darn well they are being marketed as higher power cbs, a real ham operator wouldnt be caught dead with these 10 meter export radios, dont think the majority of them are into echo.

Thst's probably what legit manufacturers are thinking... why risk a fine? We'll keep them well below the limit.

So can we assume that fcc measures radio with a cable that is half wavelength attached to a 50 ohm dummy load? Seems to me with such inaccuracies in measurement procedures they should allow a variance of + or - 1 to 2 watts.Blaskowitz Thanks this.

It's not the FCC, it's just simple economics. Export radios require modification by a (hopefully) knowledgeable technician if they are to be used on other than amateur frequencies. Truck stop radios do not, and it's hard to imagine ever Peelot or Loves hiring a tech to do the required work on the few radios they'd be likely to sell. Conventional retail sales is all about volume, shelf space, and investment in inventory.wolverine11 and lilillill Thank this. -
Didn't think about that... probably got a lot of returns by less-than-knowledgeable people when their new CB didn't work on channel 19.

Rabbi, if you're referring to my little OP test, I used a dummy load screwed directly into the watt meter's antenna port. When I tested using a Wilson 1000 mag mount, the watt values went up some, but not that much.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

FCC legal counsel has probably decided they would lose cases in which modification was performed after the sale. One analogy might be a person who buys a car and later installs illegal equipment or removes the cat converter. The car manufacturer or car dealer can hardly be blamed for those modifications -
They were caught because they were advertising them as CB radios, not as ham radios and I thikn it was Pilot that got the letter of intent to investigate their sales which quickly ended the BS.
I was at Fraser's a couple weeks back. Dooley's is unfortunate gone and turn into a sports bar, haven't been there since '89. I go to Yipsi's sidetracks for burgers, but like other places, this crap with the internet and food network crap has caused them to step up the 'dive' crap and takes away from the allure of the place. A couple weeks ago I attended a fleet owners conference in Detroit, they went to the coney place on Lafayette, but since they had their claim to fame on food network shows, they have become more crappy and have an attitude, I grew up going there with my uncles and dad in the 60's and it really has changed for the worst to me.wolverine11 Thanks this.
