Hello all. I've finished my first year (flatbed at Swift ... I know I know, but they've been good to me) and am thinking what's next. I'd like more hometime, I'm not ready to take the plunge into LO or OO, and I'd like to keep working in flatbed with an eye toward hauling heavy and big.

So my research has brought me to ATS or Maverick. There's smaller companies around home, sure, but I'm nervous about the economy and think a larger company could weather any possible storms.

    Thoughts? Advice? Thanks in advance.

    1. Maverick is an entry level company. You're already at an entry level company, so going to another company that hires students really isnt advancing, is it?
    2. Maverick is a stick and brick hauler. If your eventual goal is to go heavyhaul, moving to a stick and brick hauler would be a waste.
    3. ATS will try to get you into a lease deal.
    4. If you want more hometime, look for a company that's more regional to your home 20.

"But Six, what about the economy?"

It should move for at least the next 4 years. If not, as long as you have a clean record and experience, you can always find another job.

    Luck in battle.

If you got your eyes set on heavy and/or big I'd go ATS. I'm not sure how much Maverick does as far as heavy hauling and big stuff. Combined Transport is a flatbed company that hauls large stuff too. May want to check them out also. I'm not a flatbedder I'm just going by what I see on the road. Someone else with more insight hopefully will come along shortly. @HalpinUout and @TripleSix knows this gig they might be able to whip up some advice.

@TripleSix thank you for breaking that down. Didn't realize that about Maverick being a starter company. Makes it a pretty easy decision lol, glad I asked.

Maverick pretends to have a heavy/oversize division. It's actually about 6 guys that mostly haul Case tractors. Almost impossible to get into that group as well.

They also do glass hauling but that just isn't worth the time it takes.

ATS is the better option of those 2 if your end goal is oversize and heavy stuff.

Don't be afraid of the smaller local companies though. They tend to give you more freedom and flexibility with your schedule.

There is no shortage of driving jobs in the US no matter what the news says. Keep your record clean and you should have no problem finding a new job if need be.

No not at all. I posted what I thought was before you, tagging you in my post saying that you'd know more than I on the subject, and just as soon as I hit "post", you had already replied to the thread. So I was saying you beat me to it in helping the OP out before I even suggested to him that you could.
