Is this something that needs to be fixed immediately? Or just soon?

A steer tire like that I would get it fixed now, if on the side of the road and cannot call a service truck, limp to a tire shop.
    Don't jack around with steers.
No fixing that for a steer, basically a drive of trailer tire now, or recap.

According to 393.75, you cannot operate a tire with belts or construction showing. I don't see tire construction or ply showing in this pic.My old truck had similar damage to the inside, and my new old truck also has similar damage. It's typically from a Rock digging in during a turn. I'm inclined to say those are Bridgestone R283s, which is the same tire that has happened to on both my trucks. I wouldn't be concerned too much, just monitor it during pretrips and you may be needing an alignment soon judging by the ridge on the inside shoulder developing.

That tire will fail pretty easily in a winding road or mountain curve, especially a curve that has an "irregular road surface" or some type of road hazard where the two come into contact in a matter of very bad timing. But, the fact this damage is on the inside of the tire helps a little, but I would not want to bet my life on this aspect. I would run it as far as back to wherever the truck owner wants it to get a replacement tire or a tire swap.

That defect area will deteriorate much quicker than the rest of the tire due to wear and "weathering". Also a day of either extreme heat and extreme cold will likely see it fail - if it makes it that far.

As long as you replace it in the month or so,you should be fine. There's a little tread left. ;)

Ya on a dirt road hauling Ag or Gravel! Buy a good GY, Mich, or something else for under 250.00 and save your ### on a steer blow! Theoretically you probably will keep her upright but you will take out a hood, bumper, passerby.

Depends if any casing plies are showing, If so water will get in and start the rusting process. Check the sidewall for pinch shock, if any of the two change now

JC I have the same issues with the Bridgestone 283a. 2 differant sets have that. I just replaced the steers in January. Not happy that this seems to be a common problem.

I have a 2010 Volvo 630 and tend to run close to 12k on the steers most of the time.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

Unlese corde or steel was showing, I wohld roll with it.

I have Michelin steers and always get little chunks like that missing after I reach 100k on them. I'll roll like that all the way to 200k mi mixed in with a few dot inspections. Never had any issues.
