Hey everybody.
New here. First post.
I live in Massachusetts and I've decided on Learning Flatbed. I've researched like crazy past 3 weeks or so.
I never wanted company paid cdl school but I just learned Prime might be my only option unless anyone knows another route.
I'm 33 and had a licence suspension way back when in was 18-20yrs old (I'm getting my driving record asap) . Just realized Massachusetts will not let anyone get cdl permit if license ever suspended. My plan had evolved so much from my original (going to prime-ironically) all the way to taking the test with no schooling (pay a local o/o to teach me for test and study cdl prep books.) I hoped to get a regional job.
Anyway. Massachusetts won't even allow me a permit for a cdl according to there RMV website.
So I've come full circle...Prime Inc cdl is through Missouri as domicile. Only company i know of where you get permit and cdl in other state. Tmc you need home state permit.
Not hating on Prime. I was dead set and happy with them at first until i learned more about the cdl schools at companies etc. The 3-5month "training" is rough.
So .. Am I stuck.going to Prime?
Should i look into changing my home state?...difficult.
Is prime flatbed mostly south west region?...awesome.
How is it in general? Mileage..work..
Any other options?
Sorry if it's incoherent or posted in wrong place. Thanks for any help.

You would be better off getting you CDL from a school on your own, than via a company sponsored program.
If you can go 45 days with no income, cover the school and room plus food your going to have better choices.
Take a look at ASU Newport -
Lots of truckers are bailing out of MA for various reasons. Move to a warmer climate and a state with no personal income taxes. One recently posted he moved to Las Vegas, which is where I moved to also. Texas is good too.
There's other options for flatbed cdl school.
Jones Bros. Trucking - Missoula,Montana
Roehl Transport
Maverick Transportation
TMC
Celadon
There's nothing wrong at all with company paid school. Look at it as an avenue to reach your goal.

Have you thought about hauling hay or working for a farmer?

Unless it's under 1000 i cant afford school and stay afloat with a safety net.
Friends in Arizona though. Maybe cdl school is cheaper than here. 6-9k here. Ridiculous.
I figure passing the test as cheap as possible and I'll learn to drive at first company regardless. Maybe move and find a o/o willing to teach me to pass test for 500 or so. -
Move to Arizona and use your friends address. Might have to show a lease agreement or something to show the DMV in Arizona so you can change your drivers license.
There's some resonably priced cdl schools in Arizona.

Massachusetts is awful. Unless your filthy rich or dirt poor. But it is a state that offers a lot of variety and interesting things.
Well tmc i know I'd need a permit in my state which won't work. Any others like prime?
I was looking into the rv club in Texas.
Nevada have anything similar? I plan on living on the road first year.
Prime that bad? Why?
Money is not a huge issue...i mostly want to able to cook and stay healthy. Learning and taking it slow per se.
Prime Apu units and safe newer trucks is helpful in that. Is that right?
Am in gonna sleep about 8hrs a day? Lol. I laugh cause i hear no sleep a lot but legal driving means 10hrs down time.
No driver facing cameras either. I guess roelh is out.
Talk me out of prime if flatbed is no good there.
Thanks -
Great. I think I'll go that route. Not getting locked into a company is worth moving and saving a little more money before i start. Good to have options. Thanks

I won't knock Prime; it works for many drivers. You can do their flatbed training then when you graduate with a Missouri CDL, change it to Arizona. While you're doing all this, start the process of changing your domicile to Arizona or Texas or wherever you choose.
Roehl has cdl school in Grand Prairie,Texas but I think you need a Texas address to attend that school.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Are your friends near Phoenix? There's a couple of good cdl schools there.
I like the Southwest & that's why I moved there.
