I know this is an old thread, but I'm interviewing with Fastenal and have a question. What kind of truck are the Class B drivers driving? Is it automatic, 5 speed, 10 speed, etc?

I am curious about their Class B trucks, what kind of transmission do they have? Automatic, 5 speed, 10 speed, etc?

I worked for Fastenal. They are of course one of the long line of companies that fired me.

I ran over the road from Edwardsville, KS to Indianapolis, IN. The man who hired me quit two days after I started. I don't think the new folks would have hired me. I was 50 plus. That is not a commit on the company just on the folks there. The run was easy enough but I was paired with someone who I came real close to punching. I did ask him to set outside of the truck for that very purpose. He thought better of it. The days I was paired with another gentleman were fine.

The job did not pay as much as it should have but it had good benefits and they gave you presents for Christmas and such. The route jobs in the straight trucks were not for me. They took too much time and the roads in Northern Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska are not the best driving in the winter.

Indianapolis at the time had racial problems. I came along after the lawsuit but it was still a very touchy place. I got along with the guys but the girls were angry all the time.

Anyway, my review of the place is that it is a company that will stand by you right up until you want them to stand by you. Then you are on your own. I give them a D out of all the places that I have worked for.

Wooly Rhino I'm sorry you had a bad experience up there. I guess it just depends on the area you are in. I'm on the route delivery side and love it. Yea we unload our trucks and load them but it's very easy to me and it's a free gym membership for me lol. We have a great team down here in Orlando and wouldn't trade it for any other company. I'm making good money way more than I was on the road with Schneider and home everyday and only work 4 days of the week. Can't beat that schedule. Like any job you have your good days and bad days. But my good outweighs the bad.

Kstrong86 do you do the straight truck deliveries? Are you by yourself or do you have to run with a helper? Also, you say you unload the trucks AND load them back up when you get back to the yard? If you don't mind me asking what do the straight truck drivers start out at yearly?

They badly need drivers in Akron, OH, close to where I live now, so I have been considering them. I'd really like to work there for a year or 2 then transfer to a Fastenal yard in Tampa/Clearwater area.

I do the straight truck and day cab for deliveries. I alternate trucks with another driver. You are by yourself. At our hub we load our own trucks in the morning and at each store unload them. It's not like ups or FedEx with a bunch of boxes. For the most part everything are in these composites pallet looking things. A couple of loose things like rods or some sort. After the last stop we come back to hub and just park the truck. You can either unload the stuff you picked up or not. Every driver is on a different pay scale just depends on their route. But you would probably be looking between 42,000-45,000 starting out. Like I said every route pays different. It won't be the same across the board across the country. That's just the numbers here where I'm located. Now you mentioned moving to Tampa/Clearwater. That's actually my route and I deliver to Tampa and Clearwater and there is no Fastenal Yard in that area. Our hub is in Orlando,FL. My suggestion would be to move near the Orlando area or if you like me and don't mind the drive move to the Lakeland Area. Orlando is just to congested. I have nothing but great things to say about the company and they have treated me fairly and way better than any other company I have drove for. Just look out for the job postings in Orlando because there will not be job postings in the area you are talking about unless you want to work at the store lol.

I should also add one of the benefits of working for the company is that you get a great discount on the products they sell. I got a snow blower way below retail.
